When you try to understand why someone’s racist, you usually find it’s steeped in misinformation. That person was told something, a stereotype or an anecdotal experience, and on it goes. In turn, people start to think cruel ideas, like thinking SNAP benefits were only for People of Color. As one New York man discovered, people in the South were completely unaware where their benefits came from, and are now scrambling.
On TikTok, “Professor Noir” began by talking about racist ideals causing a lot of panic in the South. “There are people in the South that believed that SNAP benefits were only for people of color. They are now panicking because they didn’t realize they were about to lose their food stamps in November,” Noir said. Take a look at social media posts on Facebook that have to do with government assistance, and you’ll witness conservatives calling for SNAP to be cut.
Professor Noir said he’s shocked “they are going to lose the benefits that they had because they were so misled about what these benefits are.” In reality, food stamps were just renamed SNAP as a way to “take away the stigma,” as Noir put it.
“Ya’ll, there is no such thing as race-based aid. Everyone can get the same aid in the United States,” Professor Noir stated. He said that MAGA zealots and reasoning are to blame for why these people are so ill-informed. Now, they’ll be the ones losing out because of their own ignorance, stupidity, and racism.
The same cycle happened with Obamacare, which is just a nickname—it’s officially ACA. And plenty of conservatives called for the end of Obamacare, many of whom were unaware they had it, too. One commenter even pointed this out, funnily enough: “These are the same ppl who proudly said “I don’t need no Obamacare! I get my insurance through the ACA!” So no, I’m not surprised.”
“As Trump once said ‘I love the poorly educated.’ They’re going to have the day they voted for and still won’t understand how it happened,” said another.
These people went out and voted based on their own self-interests because they thought only immigrants and People of Color would be affected by it. Now, with benefits running dry and people scrambling to make ends meet, they’re feeling it. Even food banks are prepping for an influx of people who had their SNAP benefits cut because of the government shutdown.
