A viral video has been circulating on the internet showing an Uber driver in New York kicking out passengers from his vehicle after one of them made “date grape ‘jokes’/s*xual comments towards him.”
The video was posted to the social media platform TikTok, where it was viewed by thousands of users. Many of them commented and commended the driver’s behavior while also discussing the importance of having boundaries.
The above video was posted to TikTok and appears to be a cellphone recording of a different recording that originally took place inside an Uber vehicle. According to the text written atop the video, “POV: your fiance does Uber on the side & a passenger keeps making date grape ‘jokes’/s*cual comments towards him, not knowing he has zero fear of confrontation.
The video does not show what was said, as it takes place as the passengers were being asked to exit. You can see that there is a woman who still needs to be let out who asks the driver, “Don’t talk to my friend like that,” which sparks the rest of the video.
Uber operates similarly to a taxi: instead of hailing one when you need one, you can request one on a mobile device. However, that doesn’t limit the types of interactions that can occur between drivers and passengers.
Reactions to Uber Driver Kicking Passengers Out of Car
Users took to the comments to express their opinions on the matter, with many of them agreeing with his actions. One commenter said, “Even if he was single, those comments are still highly inappropriate.” Another comment said, “he runs a strict program and we love him for it 💙“
The reason this video continues to gain popularity is because of how the driver reacted. According to the driver, “She’s making inappropriate sexual jokes the entire ride. I asked her politely, please don’t do it again or I’ll let you out.” According to the woman who still needs to be let out of the car, “You did not ask politely.”
In response to this, other comments praised his boundaries and communication skills, with one person saying, “This man has boundaries and proper communication.” Another person said, “If it was a male making comments about date grape then the police would be called. Double standard….“
By the end of the video, it appears that the passenger who booked the ride was reported to Uber. As the video continues to gain popularity, it is unclear if the passengers ever apologized to the driver.
