It isn’t uncommon to hear women say that they had a less-than-satisfactory experience in the hospital during and after childbirth. These days, it’s almost like everyone has their own horror stories because of bad doctors, nurses, and hospitals in general. A woman in New York shared a video outlining her hospital experience after having a C-section. Now, others are stepping forward to tell similar stories about how they were mistreated by nurses.
Chris (@christinegeiserr on TikTok) shared a video pointing out the ridiculousness you sometimes deal with as a new mother. The video starts off with a maternity nurse saying, “Hey, your baby is crying” to which Chris replies, “Yeah, that’s why I hit the call button. I just had a C-Section.” The nurse then urges to Chris, “You need to pick up your baby.” Chris looks away, disgusted, and says, “They did a spinal tap, I can’t get up.”
In the ‘skit,’ the maternity nurse keeps being adamant about the fact Chris needs to just pick up her baby. As if you’re able to do much of anything after a spinal tap. Finally, Chris has had enough, and says, “My legs are still paralyzed.” No matter what she says, the nurse doesn’t seem to get it and the skit ends there.
Several commenters shared they were told the same by their nurses after C-sections. One even added, “C-section the only major surgery were a person is expected not only to get up immediately after but care for a new born with no help.”
Others felt strongly the other way. One woman explained, while on her high horse, “No female to me has an excuse why they cannot get to their d**n child. Sorry but not sorry.” So not only is this woman shaming, but also lacks reading comprehension and empathy.
Imagine having surgery and being told minutes later you’re going to have to take on major tasks on your own. As one person said of experiences in the hospital, “It takes one bad nurse to ruin your hospital stay. And I believe it effects your postpartum.”
Furthermore, the hypocrisy is real when it comes to what is expected of women after birth. One person pointed out that they will tell you, “’Don’t lift or carry more than 5lbs for at least a few weeks okay?!?!’…..…but my baby is 9lbs.” It just goes to show, as a woman, the world will often damn you if you don’t and damn you if you do. Like with many opinionated individuals on the internet, it’s best to do it your way and ignore the naysayers.
