A significant change is coming to the New York Yankees. The prestigious baseball team has revamped a long-standing policy about its players’ appearances, causing mixed reactions among fans.
On Friday morning, Yankees Managing General Partner Hal Steinbrenner announced an update to the Yankees Facial Hair Policy. For decades, players have been required to be either clean-shaven or wear a neat mustache to reflect a sharp look. However, all that is changing. In his statement, Steinbrenner explained:
“In recent weeks I have spoken to a large number of former and current Yankees–spanning several eras — to elicit their perspectives on our longstanding facial hair and grooming policy, and I appreciate their earnest and varied feedback.”
The son of legendary Yankees owner George Steinbrenner noted that there has been “internal dialogue” for years, but the decision lies mainly with him. “After great consideration, we will be amending our expectations to allow our players and uniformed personnel to have well-groomed beards moving forward,” Hal declared.
It is unsure what “well-groomed beard” specifies in terms of beard length. However, Hal described the new update as a “move beyond the familiar comfort.” ABC News reports that George Steinbrenner enforced the facial hair policy in 1976, protesting the prevailing trend of long hair and unkempt beards. The rule insists players can not have facial hair below the upper lip.
New York Yankees’ Updated Policy Earns Mixed Reactions
The new facial hair policy comes days after newcomer Devin Williams made headlines with his official Yankees team picture. The former Milwaukee Brewers closer had to shave his beard when he resumed spring training. However, fans noticed some hair growth on his chin days ago in his official team photo, raising questions. Unfortunately, now that Williams made a big adjustment to his appearance, the Yankees returned to their rule. The pitcher couldn’t be happier, liking the Yankees’ post on Instagram announcing the news.
Fans have since shared their thoughts on the change. While some don’t understand why such a rule exists, other conservative fans are unhappy.
“Their clean cut appearance is why they stand out. Now they will look like the rest of the dirtballs,” lamented one fan.
“Dumb move, Hal. Your dad is probably rolling over in his grave. What’s next, names on the uniform jersey? The Yankees are no longer the standout team,” another comment read.
“100+ years of history and tradition thrown away,” this user agreed with the sentiment.
“Why was there even a rule that they can’t grow facial hair in the first place?” argued a third user.
“Finally, the Yankees are allowing facial hair. Guess they realized looking like a 12-year-old wasn’t helping their game,” joked this fan.
Change often comes with controversy, which won’t be different for the New York Yankees. Hopefully, fans see beyond the looks and focus on the talents on the field.
