Square Enix has officially ann9ned that their hit-action RPG, NieR Automata, will be receiving an anime adaptation. Announced today during the game’s Fifth Anniversary Livestream, the adaptation will see the NieR Automata become an anime series to air on television.

AÂ brief teaser trailer provided with the announcement provides a glimpse into the animation style for the NieR Automata anime series will be, which will be animated by Aniplex. The production is perhaps best known for its work on such series as Fullmetal Alchemist, Fullmetal Alchemist: Brotherhood, and Sword Art Online, and Demon Slayer: Kimetsu no Yaiba. Along with the trailer, Square Enix also revealed an image of 2B along with her Pod companion robot.
According to a translated statement provided on the official website, the story will closely follow that of the original game, in which humans have fled to the moon in the face of the overwhelming force of mechanical life forms and subsequently send the combat android 2B to recapture the planet.
“We announced the decision to make a TV animation in NieR: Automata 5th Anniversary Live Broadcast which was delivered today, just 5 years after its release. NieR: Automata is an action RPG produced by Square Enix and developed by PlatinumGames. The stage is a distant future in which human beings are routing to the moon in front of the overwhelming force of ‘machine life forms’ that aliens unleash. ‘2B’ belonging to the newly organized android unit ‘Yorha’ will put himself into a fierce battle to recapture the earth”, the statement reads.
The original NieR: Automata was released in 2017 and quickly rose to fame thanks to its balletic swordplay, bullet-hell shooting, and leather-clad androids. NieR Automata was known for its fourth-wall-breaking narrative structure and multiple branching endings, though it is unclear which of these endings the anime adaptation will follow.
