Bill Cosby’s sexual assault lawsuit is not closing anytime soon, especially with the new allegations from Nevada. Year in and year out, fresh cases of Cosby’s inappropriate behaviors toward women come to light. Weeks after Nevada signed a new law that changed the limitations for civil claims and sexual lawsuits, nearly a dozen women have slammed Cosby with a lawsuit. They claim Cosby was power-hungry during his reigning years and that instead of being a mentor, he used his power to assault them.
Bill Cosby’s Sexual Assault Lawsuit Explained
As different state updates their laws surrounding sexual assault cases, women affected by Bill Cosby are being encouraged to speak out against injustices faced in the past. For them, it does not matter if they are reopening old wounds; their objective is for their abuser to face punishment
Following the governor’s declaration, nine women sued Bill Cosby in the U.S. District Court for Nevada. They have been identified as Angela Leslie, Rebecca Cooper, Janice Dickinson, Linda Kirkpatrick, Lili Bernard, Janice Baker Kinney, Pam Joy Abeyta, Heidi Thomas, and Lise-Lotte Lublin.
Lublin, who grew up in Nevada, spearheaded the new legislation. She partnered with other women involved in the same lawsuit. According to her allegations, Cosby took advantage of her after drugging her drink in a hotel. After believing their meeting was to fine-tune her acting skills, she was coaxed into taking a drink to help her relax.
Baker Kinney suffered a similar fate after visiting Cosby’s residence in Reno, Nevada. She became unconscious after consuming barbiturates, only to wake up to a naked Cosby who assaulted her.
Thomas, who wanted Cosby to mentor her, was offered a beverage that stripped her of consciousness. She alleged that she was also sexually assaulted.
Baker-Kinney and Thomas both testified against Cosby in the trial against Andrea Constand. He has been charged with three felony counts citing aggravated assault. Constand’s interaction with Cosby was in 2004, but the case was resurrected in 2018.
What The New Nevada Law Means
On May 31, Governor Joe Lombardo brought a change to the Nevada Law surrounding the civil statute of limitations in sexual abuse cases. By signing SB129, he eliminated the barrier that hindered adults from filing sexual cases. Before now, there was an expiration time— a two-year deadline that hindered adult victims from bringing forth such cases.
Bill Cosby Slams The Accusers
Throwing different claims at Bill Cosby has not made him defenseless. The former media mogul has brazenly denied that the women from Nevada are lying. This is not any different from what he has claimed in previous cases.
However, his attorney, Andrew Wyatt, is certain the wave of media attention and personal greed has inspired the women in question. Wyatt maintained that their allegations would be vetted seriously in the courthouse and the court of public opinion.
Bill Cosby Faced Several Sexual Assault Lawsuits Before Nevada Law Signing
Though the infamous onscreen host has not been found guilty of any criminal convictions, he has not been able to free himself of the sexual assault tag. Bill Cosby has been slammed repeatedly with a sexual assault lawsuit, and last year, he was declared civilly culpable over a molestation case involving Judy Huth.
Huth had accused him of molesting her at age 16 at the Playboy Mansion in LA. Before the Nevada lawsuit, Victoria Valentino, an ex-Playboy model, blamed Cosby for sexual assault and drugging her in 1969.
