Nintendo Confirms Switch 1 Game Vouchers Won’t Work For Switch 2 Games & Gold Coins Are Going the Way of the Dodo

No, this is not a pump and dump crypto scheme.

Nintendo has announced that the Switch Game Vouchers won’t work on Switch 2 games, so you better use them now. The Game Vouchers Program was launched back in 2019, and let players get a couple of Switch games at a discount when their price was combined.

So, if a player decides to get a pair of vouchers, they can redeem them for pretty much any full-price game made by Nintendo for the Switch over the console’s whole life, this includes the ability to preorder upcoming games as well. So flagship titles like The Legend of Zelda: Tears of the Kingdom, Xenoblade Chronicles, and Mario Kart count.

Since most first-party games come at around $60, this trick would help consumers save $20 if they got two major exclusives, when compared to buying them normally through the Nintendo eShop.

But all this is now obsolete since Nintendo has updated the Switch Game Vouchers page and specified that whenever games for the unreleased Switch 2 come out, they will not be redeemable using the vouchers deal like right now.

It isn’t certain exactly why this decision is being made, perhaps to make sure the Switch 2 launch has games that are available at full price, or to just get rid of the discount option entirely.

The bombshells from Nintendo don’t end there, as the Japanese company has also announced that users will not be able to earn and collect Nintendo Gold Points after March 2025. Since coins won’t be usable on the eShop after next month, if you have some hoarded up, it is likely best to use them now.

Keep in mind that even though the voucher program is going away for the Switch 2, anyone who owns the original Switch doesn’t need to worry and can continue to use discounts like normal.

Nintendo has already confirmed that the Switch 2 will have backward compatibility, so it is also likely, considering past generations, that many games will be cross-generational. If that is the case, you might be able to buy new games using the same vouchers if you are still using the Switch 1.
