No Man’s Sky, the procedurally generated space survival game, is one of the more polarizing games of 2016. It is lauded for its ambition and technical achievements, but many people feel it did not deliver on its promises. Others argue that it forgets a core goal of a game: it just is not that fun.
Developer Hello Games has announced that it is a bringing a huge new update to No Man’s Sky, entitled the “Foundation Update.” This update will introduce base building to No Man’s Sky, and it will also lay a “foundation” for the direction the game will take in the future. Detailed patch notes will be released soon, and the update will follow shortly afterwards.
The announcement also addresses some of the controversy surrounding No Man’s Sky. It reads:
“The discussion around No Man’s Sky since release has been intense and dramatic. We have been quiet, but we are listening and focusing on improving the game that our team loves and feels so passionately about.
Positive or negative feedback, you have been heard and that will truly help to make this a better game for everyone.
This update will be the first small step in a longer journey. We hope you can join us.”
Hello Games has been conspicuously absent from dealing directly with many critics of the game. This has intensified some of the scrutiny the game has come under. It should be noted that Hello Games is a tiny company and No Man’s Sky is an indie title that developed a AAA hype train.
It will be interesting to see just where Hello Games plans on taking No Man’s Sky. Our own review praised the beautiful aesthetics and gigantic world, but criticized repetitive gameplay and obvious flaws. Maybe the Foundation Update can bring something new to the universe.
