This article is over 1 years old and may contain outdated information.

Clay in No Rest for the Wicked is going to be your main material or component if you want a good-looking house. You’ll need a lot of Clay for building furniture or, in some cases, for other crafting recipes. However, due to some scaling shenanigans in this early access game, getting Clay might become harder as you progress to the point where it can feel like a rare resource. Luckily, I’m here to present a Clay farming guide for No Rest for the Wicked.

There are three locations or methods you can go to when you need Clay. These would be:

  • Dig sites (free)
  • Discovering them from chests (free, but too random)
  • Sacrament merchants (can be pricey if you need a lot)

That very well means you need a shovel if you want a consistent Clay ‘farm’ in No Rest for the Wicked. You’ll be able to buy one from the imprisoned merchant in the Mariner’s Keep, but you have to rescue him first. The Mariner’s Keep is thankfully close to the starting area from where your character is shipwrecked.

The Shovel costs several Coppers, though, so make sure you have the coins at the ready. After that, you can start digging Clay. You can also look around in the Shallows (starting area) and the Glades for treasure chests as some of them have a chance at rewarding you with Clay.

The final method, buying from Merchants, is not something I’ll recommend to newbies or fresh characters with a low level as you want to save those coins for something else (like a house). Besides, the Clay stock from Merchants is permanent anyway (and restocks every day or so).

Some players at a high enough level (past level 15) are having a hard time getting Clay from higher-level dig sites as other materials more appropriate for their level will have a higher chance of spawning. So it’s a bit counterproductive farming Clay at a high level from high-level Realm dig sites.

This might improve in the future, of course as the game is still in early access. However, if you find yourself in such a predicament and you really need Clay, there are a few workarounds for this Clay scarcity.

  1. Start a new realm, bring your high-level character there, and get the clay from the Shallows dig sites. Then go back to your old Realm. Newer realms reportedly spawn lower-level materials even though you’re at a higher level.
  2. This one is more like advanced advice for beginners. If you’re still below level 10 or level 5, don’t leave the Shallows area yet. Farm as much Clay as you can before fighting the first boss.

Hopefully, the Clay rates will be buffed up even more soon so that even higher-level players can consistently farm it.
