Banners, billboards, and graffiti have been common means of protest against Donald Trump and the Palestinian genocide, and NYC residents got a new one this week. One commuter filmed a banner hanging over a billboard as they rode past on the train. Its message? “L’Chaim Intifada,” a message of Jewish-Palestinian solidarity against the actions of the Israeli government. The long-standing alliance between the U.S. and Israel has been a major source of tension, given the genocide perpetrated by the latter and funded by the former. While a banner won’t stop Israeli and American human rights abuses, it’s enough to keep the conversation alive in NYC.
Protest Banner Spreads Message In NYC
Billboards have been a popular means of criticizing the Trump administration. This particular banner appears to read, “Jews For Liberted Palestine And The Prompt Collapse Of The U.S. Empire.” The United States has proudly and openly funded the Israeli government for decades, making possible the theft of Palestinian land and the oppression and murder of Palestinian people. This banner points to an important reality: that many anti-Zionist Jews and Palestinians stand together against both the U.S. and Israel.
The TikTok by @iwantmy2dollars666 drew several commentators leaving supportive hearts and messages. One remarked on the banner, saying, “I just saw a similar sticker out in the wild today i just posted a pic 💕” That’s not surprising considering how many signs, banners, and flags have popped up in protest following Trump’s reelection. Another commenter noted how popular this form of public messaging has become, saying
There’s a whole zine about doing this and it’s amazing and I’ve been keeping an eye out for one near me. 👀
If that’s the prevailing attitude, NYC is likely to see more protest banners in the months to come. Thankfully, New York has never been shy about how it adorns itself or what it has to say. The Big Apple seems up for a bit of civil disobedience.
