There’s no denying that New York City is one of the greatest cities in the world. Chances are, if you can’t find what you’re looking for there, you won’t find it anywhere. Outside of Rodeo Drive, it’s home to some of the best shopping in America, and possibly even the world. Locals warn tourists of scams, but not every local listens to their own advice.
A video posted by @livsspam011 has followers in a frenzy after it got more than one million views. In the video, we see the creator following a man through a New York City store. The caption in the video reads, “‘Be safe in New York, it’s a very dangerous city,’ Me following a random guy into his underground basement because he promised me a designer purse:”. The caption underneath the video reads: “He tried to scam me.”
But hey, we said the shopping was good, not that it was always legitimate.
Designer clothing and accessories are all over New York City, but the risk in finding out which one this was has followers torn. Some are joking about the situation, while others are stressing how reckless it was to follow a stranger, even a shop owner, into a remote part of a building.
“So… That was dangerous… And we’d like to see the bag you risked your life for,” one TikTok user comments. “Risked OUR lives for. She took us down there, too!” Another responds, referencing how the video ends in the store owner’s basement. “Had to make sure if I died it was on video for my documentary,” the creator comments back.
Other TikTok users joked about the situation, saying things like, “This generation is so unserious, I love it,” and “Survival instincts of a fart.” Since the video was taken in New York, some users couldn’t help but crack Law and Order jokes. “And this is how you end up on Law and Order,” one user said. Another chimed in, saying, “I know Olivia Benson is tired…”
While this video ended on a good note, it’s probably worth noting that following a random stranger into a basement is a bad idea… even if the reward is a designer purse.
