In RPGs, your characters’ levels are as important as their gears in order to beat tougher enemies and complete the story or even the whole game and unlock secrets. Here are six ways you can farm XP and level up your party fast in Octopath Traveler 2.
1. Equip XP Increasing Items and Skills
Like in many RPGs, there are certain equipment and skills that will help you farm rare monster spawn that can give loads of XP and let you level up faster in Octopath Traveler 2:
Equipment | Type | Description |
EXP Augmentor | Accessory | Receive additional XP (Found in a chest, on Frigit Isle in The Sundering Sea) |
Alluring Ribbon | Accessory | Increases rare enemy spawns (Complete “Lingering Love” Quest in Stormhail) |
Brooch of Joy | Accessory | Receive additional XP and JP |
Jewel Cake | Consumable | Receive additional XP (Dropped from Caits) |
Skill | Class | Description |
Extra Experience | Scholar | Receive additional XP after battles (Does not stack) |
More Rare Monsters | Hunter | Raises the chances of encountering rare monsters (Does not stack) |
Life in the Shadows | Thief | Receive additional XP and JP after battles at night (Does not stack) |
2. Farming Cait
Veteran JRPG players must already be familiar with unique “fleeing enemies” that when defeated, will give you a huge amount of money and EXP. The most popular examples are Metal Slime from the Dragon Quest series and Hands enemies in Persona. In Octopath Travelers 2, this kind of enemy comes in two flavors: Cait and Octopuff Travelers.
There are three Cait types and each of them has very low HP, high physical and elemental Defense, as well as extremely high Speed and Evasion:
- Cait
- Cultured Cait
- Chubby Cait
They can only be found on land, and have a low chance to appear in most areas and non-story dungeons. But you can increase the chance to encounter them by using the More Rare Monster Skill and Cait Powder item. The item can be found in a chest inside the cat-loving woman’s house in Tropu’hopu.
3. Farming Octopuff Travelers
Octopuff Travelers also have similar stats to Cait, but they instead are often found in the waters, have more types, and each type will drop a different kind of Nut:
Octopuff Type | Area | Nut Drop |
City Octopuff | Brightlands | Light Nut |
Desert Octopuff | Hinoeuma | Fortifying Nut |
Forest Octopuff | Leaflands | Sharp Nut |
Island Octopuff | Toto’haha | Slippery Nut |
Mountain Octopuff | Crestlands | Resistant Nut |
Ocean Octopuff | Harborlands | Tough Nut |
Snowland Octopuff | Winterlands | Magic Nut |
Wasteland Octopuff | Wildlands | Critical Nut |
Queen Octopuff | Any areas | Invigorating Nut |
King Octopuff | Any areas | Nourishing Nut |
To increase the chance of encountering them, you’ll need the Octopuff Pot instead, which can be obtained from a Fisherman in Conning Creek. To beat both Octopuff and Cait you will need to equip a Soulstones, throw it to them during the first turn, and quickly follow up with magic attacks.
4. Farm Battle-Worn Shark
Unlike Cait and Octopuff, this enemy can only be farmed efficiently during a specific time in your playthrough.
First, complete Partitio’s Storyline and Misha’s Next Chapter side story afterward. Then recruit Alrond by befriending him using Ochette, hiring him from Partitio’s Path Action, or leveling up Temenos to Level 80 and getting his Guide. Afterward, head to the sea and look for a shark fin on the water’s surface to face off against the Battle-Worn Shark. Now, summon Alrond during battle and he will cast Treasure Smell that can give you x100 XP buff. If he cast it, beat the Shark and it will spawn randomly in the sea. Repeat the process until you’re satisfied.
5. Using Bewildering Grace and Savescumming
Speaking of repeating a tedious process, for those of you who have tons of patience and “enjoy” savescumming (aka saving-and-loading your game for all eternity).
First, get the Bewildering Grace Dancer skill for Partitio. When using this skill, the character will perform a random action; from an insta-kill to enemies or your own party to XP multipliers. Then, you need Partitio because thanks to the Merchant support skill Full Power he can max out his BP fast and you can use a fully boosted Bewildering Grace in the first turn. At this point I think you know what you need to do.
Yep. Save your game, find enemies that will give tons of XP like a boss or Cait or Octopuff, use Bewildering Grace for XP boost, load your game if the outcome isn’t desirable, and keep doing it until you obtain a huge amount of levels and XP! Sounds pretty tiring, right? Well, it is, but it’s one way to farm some XP.
6. Clearing Optional Dungeons
If you explore the maps often, you’ll end up encountering dungeons with higher-leveled enemies complete with tough bosses at the end of it. Obviously, beating enemies that have higher levels than your party will yield more XP, so I suggest you not rush the story quests and enjoy the explorations instead. They even appear at around level 16 so you don’t have to reach endgame parts to start grinding optional dungeons too.
Octopath Traveler 2 is available now on PS4, PS5, Nintendo Switch, and PC.
