The official trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness was released today. This is the first time Doctor Stephen Strange (Benedict Cumberbatch) will have a “standalone” film since 2016’s Doctor Strange. According to Variety, this new trailer unveils some new secrets from the film. Some of those secrets include Wanda “Scarlet Witch” Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) raising hell and a vocal cameo from someone who sounds extremely similar to Patrick Stewart’s Professor X from the X-Men movies. We’ve seen past characters from Marvel films appear in WandaVision and Spider-Man: No Way Home, and it seems that Doctor Strange’s multiverse fracturing spell in the latter MCU installment may have opened the door for more.
Entertainment Weekly explains that the voice that sounds like Stewart’s is heard in the trailer after Doctor Strange is handcuffed for his problematic spell and led to a chamber where we hear the voice say, “We should tell him the truth.” The voice does sound a lot like Stewart, and if it is, one can only speculate over whether he is portraying Professor X or a new character. As for Scarlet Witch, it does indeed seem like Wanda is not in the happiest of moods when she tells Doctor Strange, “You break the rules, you become a hero. I do it; I become the enemy. That doesn’t seem fair.” We also get a tease of Wanda interacting with another version of herself, perhaps her astral self we saw in the WandaVision finale post-credit scene, in a room from her created home in Westview. It appears that Wanda is still dealing with significant grief, as we saw in the series, and now it’s still causing her to create chaos.
This is the first trailer for Doctor Strange in the Multiverse of Madness we’ve gotten since the teaser was released in December. We can look forward to seeing it in full form when it is released on May 6.
