The official trailer for Doctor Who: Flux was released today with several past villains making an appearance. A teaser trailer from October 9 teased that we’d see Weeping Angels and Sontarans in the new season. In this new trailer, we got them along with Cybermen and the Ood.
We also find out in this trailer that Doctor Who: Flux will consist of “six thrilling chapters.” Entertainment Weekly reports that Chris Chibnall is billing Doctor Who: Flux as a serial season similar to those of the classic Who era. This is a shift for the series, which since its revival in 2005 has consisted of mostly stand-alone episodes.
This will be Chibnall’s last season as showrunner and Jodie Whittaker’s final season as the Doctor, though she will appear in three specials in 2022. Whittaker’s Doctor will be joined by returning companion Yaz (Mandip Gil) and Dan Lewis (John Bishop). A mysterious new character named Vinder will be portrayed by former Game of Thrones actor Jacob Anderson.
Daily Mail reports that Whittaker has already filmed the regeneration scene. However, the unrevealed new Doctor was not present for that filming. Whittaker herself was not present for Peter Capaldi’s regeneration.
Several fans are speculating on who the next Doctor will be. A fan favorite is Olly Alexander of Years & Years. The Doctor has been portrayed by thirteen other actors, Whittaker being the first woman.
Doctor Who follows the adventures of the Doctor, a time lord from the planet Gallifrey who saves the universe from various threats. The Doctor can regenerate whenever mortally wounded, which is why the character has had so many portrayals and why the show has gone on so long. The show originally ran from 1963 to 1989 and was revived in 2005.
