A woman in Mayfield, Ohio, brought several pieces to a local Michaels and attempted to have them framed. One of them was an artwork of President Donald Trump. According to her, Michaels employees refused to frame it for political reasons, and now she has taken the case to the attorney general.
Tore Maras shared the interaction on TikTok. She often shares a variety of content online, including photos and the occasional political clip. The one attached above became her biggest one yet in a day. It garnered 209,600 views, 19,700 likes, and more than 3,400 comments.
The Ohio woman had arrived at the local Michaels with three items that needed framing: an 80-year-old newspaper from the day of the Moon landing, a portrait of President Trump on Winston Churchill’s chair, and Legacy of Hope, a Jon McNaughton art piece showing past presidents and other political figures praying for Trump. The latter was described as a religious piece.
Framing Denied
According to Tore, an employee saw her artwork and walked away. A second employee then spoke with Tore and, as shown in the video, told her that Michaels is not allowed to make “political pieces.” Tore clarified that the piece wasn’t political, but a personal piece she would put up in her home.
“You’re telling me that that lady over there saw President Trump, her president, and she’s upset because I wanted it framed, and Michaels is allowing this behaviour?” Tore asked.
Nothing came out of the conversation, as the second Michaels employee said there was nothing they could do, as it went against the store’s policy regarding politics. The first employee was seen in the background, focusing on other chores.
In a follow-up clip, the Ohio woman shared a conversation she had with a Michaels Customer Care agent. During the call, the agent said that Michaels Stores have a policy of denying service to “sensitive items or things that are inappropriate.” Tore stated she filed a complaint with the attorney general for what she calls “deceptive practice” and “discrimination for a religious item.”
“I guess they will go bankrupt right around Christmas,” Tore wrote in the first clip’s description.
Social Media Reactions
The story sparked many responses online, mainly from viewers who called for consequences. One said, “This employee should be fired, and Michael’s stores should be boycotted.” Another one commented, “Call corporate and turn her in. She needs to be fired.”
Other viewers contested the policy claim. One wrote, “I work for Michaels and am very big on following policies and procedures. I have never heard of this policy. Michaels is a business. Money is money.” Another one added, “I was a framing manager for Michaels for 7 years. There’s no such policy. She chose to decline.”
It remains unclear whether Tore managed to get her items framed elsewhere. However, judging by her frustration with the experience, it seems unlikely she’ll be setting foot inside a Michaels store again anytime soon.
