The Murmurs in the Forest quest or task in Once Human, is one of the earliest obstacles that will make or break early game players or beginners. The troublesome part is that it’s just a practice quest for the actual boss. So it’s something you should consider as a measurement of your readiness. Fret not because we’re here to help you be ready, so you can finally finish Murmurs in the Forest in Once Human and defeat its practice boss.

Requirements & Recommendations for Murmurs in the Forest

There might be instances in the game where you get Murmurs in the Forest earlier especially if a higher-level player carries you or if you find a Hive (clan) that’s too helpful. However, do note that the Murmurs in the Forest quest is intended for players who meet the threshold:

  • Level 14

That’s easy enough to achieve even if you follow only the main quest. But if for some reason you’re not there yet, you can level up your character way past Level 10 if you go around activating Rift Anchors and finding Mystical Crates in the Meyer’s Market area.

Along the way, it’s important to get your equipment up to speed.

Merely being Level 14+ doesn’t guarantee that you’ll get to finish the Murmur’s in the Forest quest. It’s a solo quest, after all, and something the game expects you to finish before you can participate in the co-op or actual version of the boss.

So I recommend getting the right tools for the job before you start the Murmurs in the Forest quest guide:

  • Craft a fast Tier II main weapon (ideally SOCR – The Outsider Rifle)
  • Craft a Tier II Sniper Rifle (unlocked through Memetics – Crafting – Long-Range Firepower)
  • Calibrate both weapons to at least +2 (press J on the Gear Workbench)
  • Bring at least 500 Copper Ammunition for both weapons

A Sniper Rifle is beastly in this fight and the SOCR – The Outsider Rifle (which you can obtain through the Wish Machine) is a weapon that you can take to the endgame given its power.

You’ll likely get hurt or even get downed during the fight, which is why I recommend bringing as many Activators (healing potion) and Adrenaline (revive) as you can. If you have trouble crafting them, you can get free Activators and Adrenaline in the Events – Regular Events menu (access Events by pressing F3 or through the Main Menu).

Once you’re well-equipped, it’s time to go to fight Treant’s Doppelganger to advance the Murmurs in the Forest quest for Once Human. Simply follow the quest marker. It will lead you to an instanced dungeon.

How to Defeat Treant’s Doppelganger

Upon entering the instanced dungeon, you’ll find yourself in a fractal area with large platforms of disconnected land. There’s no harm if you fall into the chasms, the game will just teleport you back to a safe platform. Use the Sniper Rifle (if you brought one) to kill the monstrous tentacles from afar.

Just progress through the area and use the glowing purple jumping pads to get across and eventually get to Treant’s Doppelganger. As soon as you land on Treant’s platform, the boss fight will begin. Follow these tips throughout the boss fight.

Keep your Distance

From time to time, Treant will stomp and release a shockwave which starts from the impact point and expands outward. This is one of his most dangerous attacks and can bring you down from full health to 1/4 or 1/3.

You can jump over hit, however. You just have to time it right. But if you want to avoid going down because of this shockwave, just ensure that you have full health all the time. This way, you can tank the shockwave in case you miss the jump.

Additionally, keeping your distance from the boss lets you shoot its most glaring weak point (the head/mouth) or avoid another devastating attack.

Use the Rocks to Avoid the Laser

Another devastating attack is the mouth laser. This can take a huge chunk of your health. You can try to finesse this one by running sideways or rolling frantically. However, the safer option is to hide behind a rock in the boss arena.

This is also where keeping your distance helps since Treant’s Doppelganger telegraphs his attack well, allowing you to run to safety.

Keep shooting Treant’s Doppelganger if he’s not performing the aforementioned attacks and you’ll eventually defeat him.

Unlock the Rift Anchors

After defeating Treant’s Doppelganger, the Murmurs in the Forest quest won’t be done just yet. You still need to find and activate four Rift Anchors all over the Broken Delta area or around Meyer’s Market.

However, if you’ve done that task (out of curiosity or to level up) before fighting Treant’s Doppelganger, it will count, and you will have fewer Rift Anchors to unlock. Once you’ve found and activated four Rift Anchors, that’s it. You’ve completed the Murmurs in the Forest quest and also unlocked the Gaia Cliff Monolith which houses the real Treant boss.

Don’t worry, the same tactics work here as well, and you can find co-op partners this time.
