Hunting can be a risky hobby, especially if you’re not too keen on following the rules. For one Oregon man, Travis A. Palmer, it seems like rules were more of a suggestion than a requirement. Palmer had a serious habit of illegally hunting elk and mule deer at night, and he especially liked using a method called spotlighting. That’s when a hunter shines a bright light at an animal to stun or freeze it, making it easier to shoot. It’s a method that’s banned in Oregon because it’s both unsafe and unethical.
To make matters worse, Palmer liked to shoot wildlife from public roads using a rifle, which is also illegal. He was doing all this while his hunting privileges were already suspended. As if that wasn’t enough, he also broke a bunch of fishing laws. He tried to catch wild steelhead and was caught fishing at night, which is another big no-no.
The whole thing kicked off in March 2023 when someone tipped off law enforcement that Palmer had a bull elk head stashed away. Officers showed up and took it. Not long after, they caught him again for illegally taking another bull elk and two mule deer bucks. As the investigation went on, they ended up seizing three sets of antlers, a rifle, a bow, a spotlight, and a bunch of other gear he’d used while poaching.
In the end, Palmer racked up over 40 wildlife and fishing violations. That landed him 95 days in jail and a $22,000 fine. Not only that, but he also got a lifetime ban from ever hunting or fishing in Oregon again.
Many internet users are absolutely furious with the Oregon man and his repeated attempts to illegally hunt wildlife. A lot of people feel that the punishment he received is far too lenient, especially considering he’s a repeat offender. One Redditor wrote, “He is a poacher… He is going to poach still. A ban does nothing! What a complete waste.”
Others argued that 95 days in jail isn’t nearly enough. “A few days in jail isn’t enough for knuckleheads like this,” one user said. “He needs like a year in prison.”
Several Redditors expressed doubt that the sentence would actually stop Palmer. Many believe he’ll just brush off what they see as a slap on the wrist and go right back to poaching. One person even commented that this whole thing will either end with Palmer getting into even bigger trouble down the line or being “dealt with by Mother Nature.”
