Outrage After Florida Threatens to Defund Catholic Schools Unless Students Can Opt Out of Vaccines: ‘Taxpayers shouldn’t be funding private schools’

Florida Attorney General James Uthmeier recently threatened to pull funding from Catholic schools unless they grant students exemptions from vaccine requirements. The threat angered many Florida residents, who argued that such a decision would only harm the state’s overall public health in the long run.

As reported by The Independent, Uthmeier recently sent a letter to the Florida Conference of Catholic Bishops to “express concerns” about some Catholic schools not granting students religious exemptions from vaccination requirements. As a result, Uthmeier argued that the schools were violating the law, as Florida allows exemptions when parents raise religious objections to vaccines.

To force the schools to comply, Uthmeier threatened to make them ineligible for school vouchers. Reports indicate that more than 90% of students enrolled in Catholic schools in the state use vouchers, so the move could significantly affect them.

Florida Reacts to Florida’s Threats Against Catholic Schools

Uthmeier’s threats did not sit well with Reddit’s r/Florida. Many users were doubly frustrated: they believed private religious schools should not receive voucher funding in the first place, and they also supported the schools’ refusal to grant vaccine exemptions.

The most upvoted comment in the thread was: “Why are Catholic schools receiving funding?” Someone else responded: “The state vouchers go to private or home-schooled students. He’s threatening not to pay voucher money to Catholic schools.” This led others to chime in: “Taxpayers shouldn’t be funding private schools. We should be funding public schools.”

Others were horrified by the idea of fewer children receiving vaccines: “I thought Republicans want people to have more children? So then why do they want those same children to die a horrible, painful death from an easily preventable disease?”

Some parents were also outraged by how this could affect their own children: “What if I don’t want my child exposed to kids carrying pathogens whose parents can’t be bothered to think critically?”

Even a seemingly Catholic resident was skeptical, saying: “And that is the first time they are going to use vouchers to force private schools to do what they want. Wonder what’s next? Also, to my fellow Catholics, look how quickly they turned on our religious beliefs.”

It remains to be seen whether these schools will comply with the attorney general’s demands and whether they will ultimately lose their funding.
