What would he need the money for?

There has been a lot of controversy surrounding Minnesota ICE agent Jonathan Ross following the tragic shooting of Renee Good. Right after this happened, people started a GoFundMe for Good’s family, which raised over $1 million. Now, ICE supporters are doing the exact same thing for Ross, who hasn’t been seen since the shooting. Someone started a GoFundMe for the agent, and so far, they have managed to raise over $350,000 for him.

I just reported Ice agent’s GoFundMe for breaking terms of service. Did you too? #ice #gofundme #jonathanross #minneapolis

The GoFunMe description reads:

“After seeing all the media bs about a domestic terrorist getting GoFundMe. I feel that the officer that was 1000 percent justified in the shooting deserves to have a GoFundMe. Funds will go to help him.”

The person who started the fundraiser said they had gotten in touch with the father of the Minnesota ICE agent and told him what they were doing. They said they planned to add the agent as a beneficiary once they reached him. Naturally, the fundraiser has sparked outrage among people demanding accountability after the fatal shooting in Minneapolis. Many have begun sharing videos on TikTok showing the GoFundMe and urging others to report it. One creator who spoke out against the campaign noted that it appears to violate the platform’s terms of service, which prohibit raising money for “the legal defense of financial and violent crimes.” Critics have highlighted that this would include cases like murder. Even the fundraiser’s organizer acknowledged this point when they wrote “the officer that was 1000 percent justified in the shooting.”

The TikTok user then showed people how they, too, could go and report the fundraiser. More people expressed their outrage that anyone would think of starting a GoFundMe for the Minnesota ICE agent. Another TikTok user posted a video where she expressed how she saw this as something that shouldn’t be happening in the first place. Since she shared a screenshot of the fundraiser when it was just started, it appeared that the GoFundMe owner actually changed the description. They previously wrote in it, “Funds will go to help pay for any legal services this officer needs.” Again, this directly violates the platform’s rules. It’s not clear if the fundraiser will continue or if GoFundMe will take it down following the increasing backlash.

People Reacting to the Minnesota ICE Agent’s GoFundMe

The TikTok users’ outrage in their videos was matched by dozens of people who couldn’t believe that the Minnesota agent now has someone raising funds for him. This is why many vowed to report it. “I just reported it as a scam,” one person wrote. Another person said, “I reported it too and stated that he murdered a woman and that it isn’t appropriate for this GFM to be valid.” Someone else believed that Good’s family is the ones who deserve this money. “They need to take that go fund me down and give the money to Renee’s wife and children,” they wrote. One person also pointed out the difference between the two GoFundMe as they said, “You see that he is asking for 160k when Renee 50K make it make sense.”

More people expressed their outrage at the fundraiser as one person asked, “[expletive] does he need money for? Treatment of fictitious injuries?” This made another person reply, “It’s to pay for his new identity because he has 2 choices – trial or new identity.” Someone also commented, “PEOPLE ARE DONATING MONEY TO THIS MAN!? America is cooked.” One woman also pointed out another difference between the two fundraisers as she said, “Meanwhile, Rene Good’s family closed their GoFundMe after raising what they needed to support her children and honor her memory.” There were several comments that stated proudly that they donated to Ross. Of course, they, too, received backlash. Despite the fundraiser being a relatively recent one, people are already talking about it.
