A six-year-old girl who had passed away in Charlotte, North Carolina, after being locked in a dog crate and starved. According to a video circulating online, she was revealed to have been placed in a home with caregivers who had 10+ arrests just before her own death. The claims have not been independently verified.
Matt Van Swol reposted the news on the social media platform X, where users quickly took to the replies to share their opinions on the matter, including discussing how the system could have allowed that.
The above video was posted to Van Swol’s X account, and the clip shows breaking news concerning Dominique Moody, a six-year-old girl who was allegedly kept in confined conditions and died following reported neglect.
It was revealed that her aunt, Tonya McKnight, had custody of the young girl during this horrific discovery and was later charged with the murder. However, Moody’s mother reportedly explained that the system that was designed to keep her daughter safe failed her.
The above report explains that police allegedly visited the home where Moody was staying five times from the time she was two, over a total of four years. As a result, a House oversight committee has sent a letter to Charlotte-Mecklenburg police requesting any documentation related to Moody’s case, a request that is supposedly being addressed.
Reactions to Reported Oversight in North Carolina Child’s Death
Users on X took to the replies to the post to share their opinions, many also believing that the system failed. One person wrote, “The average 6-year-old girl weighs 44 pounds. Dominique weighed 27. And, while FIVE separate [expletive] DSS visits found “NOTHING WRONG?” That’s not a failure of one caseworker. That’s a FAILURE of the ENTIRE [expletive] MACHINE that keeps cashing checks while kids die in crates.“
According to another comment, McKnight “was charged with 5 counts of child abuse just over a month before she was arrested for murder of the little girl.” Accompanying this post is a list of charges directed at McKnight as well as related mugshots.
In response to this, commenters were upset, with another writing, “DSS employees who did this need to give life imprisonment! It’s happening Nationwide!” Authorities have not confirmed all details referenced in the viral posts.
Currently, Mecklenburg County has still not disclosed when DSS last visited the home, and CMPD is investigating the case as a homicide. McKnight’s attorney has also reportedly asked a judge to prevent CMPD from releasing information related to the case.
The investigation remains ongoing as officials continue to review the case.
