President Donald Trump is facing backlash online after saying at an event in Washington DC that he had the military fix his autocorrect.

While speaking at a White House event for Military Mothers, Trump shared an anecdote about his autocorrect, saying it would change First Lady Melania’s name to “Melody.” He brought it up after mentioning a woman named Melody Wolff, then went on to say he liked the name Melody while reflecting on the situation with his phone’s autocorrect.

Trump says he requested assistance from the military to prevent autocorrect from changing Melania’s name in his social media posts:

“They have ‘spell correct’ and ‘word correct’ on these crazy machines that we use to put out Truths, or they used to be called Tweets, and every time I wrote ‘Melania’, it would correct to ‘Melody’,” Trump said. He added that this autocorrection would sometimes happen when he was writing posts celebrating Melania.

According to Trump, when the autocorrect would change Melania’s name to “Melody,” he said he would get “absolute decimated.” The remark that drew the most attention online was his claim that he had the military fix the issue so it would stop happening. “You know who corrected? The military. I said, ‘Come here, you got to correct this. You’re killing me,’” he said.

Viewers Outraged After Trump’s Story in Washington DC

The video sparked reactions online. Many viewers reacted critically to Trump’s remarks at the Washington DC event, with some questioning the appropriateness of involving the military in such a matter. One person wrote, “I miss having a smart president,” Another asked, “Doesn’t the military have other things to worry about?” Some users responded with humor, with one commenting, “so here I’ve just been clicking the little check mark to let my phone know that I did type the correct word when I could have simply called in the military?!”

More users were critical of Trump’s remarks, with some responding harshly. One person wrote, “Someone needs to spell-correct his damn brain. Imagine admitting the military had to help you defeat autocorrect because you kept misspelling your own wife’s name, and people still think you should be trusted with nuclear weapons.” Another commenter said, “I feel like using the military to set an exception list on your phone’s autocorrect is laughable and indicative of Trump’s intelligence.”

The anecdote about the autocorrect issue sparked strong reactions online, with many viewers criticizing the idea of involving the military in what they saw as a minor personal matter.
