Outrage After Washington Senator Patty Murray Defends Mifepristone as Abortion Fight Intensifies: ‘Specifically Comparing It to Viagra Is Wild’

That’s quite a comparison

Washington Senator Patty Murray posted to the social media platform X defending access to mifepristone as the fight over abortion medication continues to play out nationally. The Democratic senator argued that the drug is “safe and effective” while also accusing the Trump administration of seeking to restrict medication abortion across the country.

Murray’s comments drew a lot of criticism online, particularly from people who oppose abortion and questioned her characterization of the medication’s safety. Others took the discussion well beyond mifepristone and into a heated argument over abortion rights in the United States.

Mifepristone is safe and effective—and has been widely used for over 30 years.

In fact, it’s safer than viagra.

But Trump officials want to rip away access to medication abortion in ALL 50 states. It was never about states’ rights—it was ALWAYS about controlling women.

Murray has been among the Senate’s most outspoken defenders of medication abortion, and she has repeatedly challenged Republican efforts to impose additional restrictions on mifepristone. In her post, when referring to the drug, she writes, “In fact, it’s safer than viagra. But Trump officials want to rip away access to medication abortion in ALL 50 states. It was never about states’ rights—it was ALWAYS about controlling women.”

The FDA first approved mifepristone in 2000, and the medication is commonly used alongside misoprostol for medication abortions. Murray and other Senate Democrats took to Reproductive Freedom For All to share that more than 7.5 million people have used mifepristone in the United States since its approval.

The issue has become particularly contentious as Republicans continue pushing for changes to how mifepristone can be prescribed and distributed. Republican senators have previously called for restoring an in-person doctor visit requirement for abortion pills, arguing that telehealth prescribing does not provide sufficient medical supervision.

Murray has taken the opposite position, describing efforts to reconsider the medication’s availability as part of a broader attempt to restrict abortion medicine.

Comments and Reactions to Washington Senator’s Mifepristone Post

The response to Patty Murray’s post was overwhelmingly heated, with several commenters rejecting her description of mifepristone as safe and effective. One person simply asked, “Safer to whom?” Similarly, a different user wrote, “Safe for whom? Safe for the ectopic pregnancy? Safe for the pre-born person?”

Some commenters were concerned over her choice of comparison, with another writing, “Specifically comparing it to Viagra is wild. One gives life to babies and the other ends babies’ lives.“

Others turned their attention to the wider abortion debate rather than Murray’s specific claim about the medication. One commenter accused Democrats of being obsessed with the topic, writing, “Patty and her obsession with abortion again. Do you need to see someone about this Patty?“

The intensity of the responses shows that even after years of legal and political battles over mifepristone, abortion medication remains one of the quickest ways to ignite an argument online.
