Outrage as Virginia Gov. Spanberger’s Officer Says Utility Bill Will Rise Another 20 Years: ‘If we last that long’

Are data centers making everyone’s utilities more expensive?

Virginia’s chief energy officer, Josephus Allmond, recently revealed that residents can expect utility bills to continue rising over the next 20 years. The announcement did not sit well with many Virginians, who believed energy prices were already increasing too quickly.

As reported by The Roanoke Times, Allmond recently told reporters that rising electricity bills were being driven by aging power plant infrastructure that needs to be expanded. Virginia is also home to hundreds of data centers, which already account for 20% to 30% of the state’s electricity consumption. In the future, that number could be even higher.

However, Governor Abigail Spanberger is trying to push back against rising energy costs. The creation of the chief energy officer position, for example, was one of the first measures implemented under her administration to solve this problem.

Additionally, increased taxes have been imposed on data centers’ energy consumption, and recent legislation has expanded investments in solar power. Even so, utility bills are expected to continue rising for at least the next two decades.

Virginia Residents Are Not Happy With Energy Prices

The news alarmed Virginia residents on Reddit’s r/Virginia, who complained that their utility bills had already risen considerably in the recent past: “My $60 last year in July bill cost $80 this year. That’s 33% more for the same usage.”

Others were seemingly enraged that consumers were footing the bill despite the state generating a budget surplus: “The state pulled in $936M in excess last year. They could put that toward lowering electricity bills for everyone. But they won’t.”

Some folks complained that “data centers alone accounting for 20%-30% of all electricity usage in the state is actually insane.” Another local criticized state politicians over the issue: “Politicians are destroying this beautiful land. We can only hope they receive the Karma they’ve got coming.”

What most users seemed to agree on was that the current model of encouraging the construction of more and more data centers was not working well: “It’s not sustainable. We definitely need to invest much more in renewable energy as well as having a more sensible plan for commercial energy usage.” Some people were even more pessimistic, saying that the situation would only improve after two decades: “If we last that long.”

At the moment, the situation remains uncertain, as the government struggles to keep residents’ utility bills low while dealing with aging infrastructure and continuing to attract data center investment.
