Following the overwhelming success of Marvel Rivals, Overwatch 2 is not about to back out of the competition. Blizzard Entertainment and Overwatch 2‘s developers have announced some promising new developments for the game for 2025, particularly for the PvP experience (the only experience it has since its PvE is dead). Given Overwatch 2‘s track record, however, some players remain wary of what to expect.
The information came from Blizzard Entertainment itself where it announced on its official Overwatch website that the game is going to be packed with “groundbreaking changes to the PvP experience”. Supposedly, it will be unlike anything players have seen before.
Blizzard then claims that the changes will be so big and significant that a dev blog won’t be enough to relay all of the presumably exciting new stuff. Hence, they are inviting Overwatch players and fans to tune in to Overwatch 2‘s official YouTube and Twitch channels on February 12 for the live stream.
So basically, it’s a teaser or an announcement for an announcement in this case. But you can’t deny the oozing energy behind Blizzard‘s promises for Overwatch 2. It was confident of Blizzard to enable the comment section for the post, of course, and wouldn’t you know it, some of the most-liked player sentiments in the comment section are on the fence.
“I’m fully aware that they disappointed us before and I shouldn’t get my hopes up, but there’s a traitorous part of me that can’t help it,” says Valkyr.
“The ‘groundbreaking’ changes better not [be] 6v6 because girl, we’ve been there already. It ain’t exactly new,” suspects Terkwise.
“This is a panic announcement to try to drum up interest in OW and I doubt they know yet exactly what will be in Spotlight – what they can pull forward from future seasons to release sooner to make things look better than they would with the previous timetable,” suggests LazyDragon.
Will Overwatch 2 Deliver?
It’s not exactly clear what Overwatch 2 will have in store for February 12, but it appears the general sentiment of the player base is either collective worry or collective complaints. The cancelation of PvE and the overpriced skins are just some of the common woes for Overwatch 2 since its release.
On the other side of the grass, Marvel Rivals, a hero shooter and direct competition for Overwatch 2, is enjoying one of the most impressive spotlights in gaming. The free-to-play Marvel hero arena game has managed to retain its huge player base and keep them interested for several months and counting now.
Overwatch 2 will really need something groundbreaking at this point to keep up or to win some of its fans back.
