Overwatch 2 is one of the larger pipe dreams known to the modern gaming industry, with its announcement in 2019 met with positive reception, but not adequately followed upon. It feels as though throughout the nearly three years since its reveal trailer that we’ve heard about the game maybe three times, and a few of those times have lacked any sort of meaningful gameplay showcase. Instead, they opted to discuss the team’s passion for the game despite the live game receiving next to no updates (unless you want to count the two deathmatch maps). Yet today, the team has finally decided to change that. Through a new Developer Update, the team at Blizzard Entertainment has announced an incoming Closed Alpha along with a Closed PvP Beta in late April for Overwatch 2. There were plenty of other reveals as well, so read on below!

What’s Happening With Overwatch and Overwatch 2?

Most surprising out of anything within the four minute video, the team came out to apologize for the neglect they’ve given the live Overwatch game. The updates have been incredibly scarce, and when they do happen, they’re a near meaningless Experimental Mode update or one new Deathmatch map. So as such, the team have owned up to that and apologized. Will the main game be getting new changes? We’ll have to wait and see, though news surrounding Overwatch 2 should become more frequent.

Speaking of Overwatch 2, some major changes are being made on that front. First of all, the team will be separating the PvP side of the game from the PvE side, opting to focus and push out the former prior to the PvE section of the title. Along with that, the Closed Alpha of the PvP game is set to be pushed out this month, with a Closed PvP Beta for Overwatch 2 geared up for late April. Following that, public playtests will become more frequent throughout the rest of the year, letting players test out content that’s in store for the final release.

In the immediate future though, if you’d like to participate in the Closed PvP Beta, you can head over to the official Overwatch 2 website and sign up. Keep in mind though that at the time of writing, the web servers appear to be heavily clogged.

So what are your thoughts on today’s news? Are you interested in Overwatch 2, or plan to steer clear? Let me know!
