Despite reports that the long-awaited sequel to Pacific Rim was delayed indefinitely, director Guillermo Del Toro reported that the budget and script for Pacific Rim 2 was turned in.
Here’s what the famed director had to say on Twitter:
PACIFIC RIM 2: Budget and script went in. No answers yet. If anything happens, I will post. If nothing happens, I will just keep rambling.

Even though Pacific Rim 2 was delayed, both Legendary and Universal Pictures remained committed to the sequel. It’s never been a matter of if, but when. Pacific Rim, which debuted in 2013 and earned more than $411 million worldwide, was widely expected by many to spawn a sequel. But both sides made the decision to halt development and production of Pacific Rim 2 so that the creative team had time to develop a sequel that exceeded the expectations of the first film.
Last year, Collider spoke with Del Toro, who revealed that Pacific Rim 2 will take place a few years after the conclusion of the first film. According to Del Toro, the Kaiju threat has been decimated; that Jaeger technology has advanced to a point where the technology can defeat the large, amphibious creatures in a different way. Del Toro told Collider, “It’s a few years after the first one. It’s not an immediate follow-up. It is the world having been freed of Kaiju, what happens to the world after – what happens to the Jaeger technology once the Kaiju are not a threat. It’s quite a jump.
