It’s natural for parents to feel excited about the idea of their child proposing to the person they love. But according to the internet, excitement doesn’t excuse setting the stage for a painfully awkward proposal. That’s what many viewers believed happened after a Tennessee mom shared a video involving her son. In the clip, she filmed herself and her son sitting at a Texas Roadhouse as he showed her the engagement ring he planned to propose with. At that point, viewers might have hoped the proposal would happen somewhere else — but the signs weren’t encouraging. Even when his girlfriend arrived and sat beside him, the young man didn’t smile or show much emotion. It quickly became clear that things were about to get much worse.
The Tennessee mom continued filming as her son and his girlfriend walked out of the restaurant. As they crossed the parking lot, viewers might have expected them to head to a more meaningful spot for the proposal. Instead, they stopped between two parked cars. That’s where he dropped to one knee. “You are my forever. How would you like to marry me?” he asked as his girlfriend looked on. To make the moment even more awkward, she was still holding their leftovers while he proposed. Many viewers assumed she would turn him down after such an unromantic setup. But despite everything, she was clearly happy and said yes.
The mom, who was the one behind the camera, kept directing the proposal. When her son started walking away, she informed him that he was supposed to hug and kiss his partner. They hugged and then kissed right outside of Texas Roadhouse. I’m not exactly sure if this was seen as romantic by anyone involved. However, if they are happy, then that is what matters. While the couple and the mom looked happy, they faced a lot of backlash. Most of the backlash was directed at the boy’s mom for allowing this to happen. This is why she had to write:
“I tried helping him but he has ADHD and he got so overwhelmed and anxious that he had just called me up and said I can’t wait any longer. The poor boy was so nervous that it might of not been to yalls standards but guess what? Where, how, and when doesn’t matter if your in love! They already live together and pay their own bills which is more than a lot of adults do this day and time. I’m happy for them. Yall need to quit being so judgmental!!!!!! Learn to be happy for others and not haters!!!!!!! Also if I had asked to carry her to go box she would of laughed at me because it had her dogs bone in it!!!!!!”
People Reacting to the Tennessee Mom’s Video
Over 11,000 comments were left under the Tennessee mom’s video, and the majority weren’t kind. Since a proposal at Texas Roadhouse’s parking lot doesn’t take a lot of effort, one woman wrote, “As a girl mom, absolutely not.. this isn’t even bare minimum..” Another person replied in agreement, “That’s what I’m saying, this isn’t a class thing, it’s not a money thing, it’s just a thinking thing. Unless she’s a huge parking lot enthusiast and this is her favorite parking lot in the world, there was a lot of room for improvement. Doesn’t need to cost a bunch of money, but it does need to have some thought put into it, because that demonstrates a capacity to think about stuff, and that’s extremely important.”
Other comments were quite judgmental of the Tennessee mom. “Mom why didn’t you help him plan something better….,” one person wrote. Another person replied, “Right? This is spiteful. She doesn’t like her.” Someone else added, “Hey moms I’m begging yall to teach your sons that their future wives deserve better than a parking lot proposal.” Some people also wished that the girl would break up with her new fiancé in the future. “Hopefully this young girl realizes she deserves a lot more than a proposal at a parking lot and a man that walked away right after without helping,” one woman wrote. Thankfully, some comments were actually happy for the young couple.
