James Gunn’s upcoming movie DC The Suicide Squad has already got a spinoff series in development at HBO Max: Peacemaker. We’ve already got several confirmed several cast members, and the latest to be cast is Orange Is The New Black alum Danielle Brooks.
This casting news comes according to a report by Deadline. Other than the name of the character she plays, we do not yet have any indication as to how big a role she will have. She will play Leota Adebayo in the HBO Max series, joining other confirmed cast members, including John Cena (Peacemaker), Steve Agee (John Economos), Robert Patrick (Auggie Smith), Jennifer Holland (Emilia Harcourt), and Chris Conrad (Vigilante/Adrian Chase). Brooks is currently best known for her portrayal of Tasha “Taystee” Jefferson on Netflix’s popular comedy Orange Is The New Black.
Peacemaker will be a direct spinoff from James Gunn’s The Suicide Squad. So far, The Suicide Squad has completed a lot of filming and is set to release in August 2021. Of course, with the coronavirus pandemic putting a huge pause button on most film and television sets, it still runs the risk of getting pushed back. In the summer, we got this awesome sneak peek at the movie from the DC FanDome event. It looks really fin:
Fans hope it will fare better among critics than David Ayer’s disappointing 2016 movie, Suicide Squad.
The upcoming spinoff will reportedly act as an origin story for Cena’s Peacemaker. The character is said to be determined for world peace, no matter how many people he has to kill to get there. Sounds brutal. HBO Max ordered eight episodes for the debut season. Showrunner James Gunn wrote all eight episodes and will direct a handful of them. Production is slated to begin in early 2021. While also playing the titular character, Cena will serve as a co-executive producer.
Peacemaker does not yet have a release date nor a trailer.
