As the saying goes, if you mess with the bull, you get the horns, and when one pet dog messed with a feisty Pennsylvania groundhog, he got drop-kicked. The dog’s owner, Reddit user Nf1087, shared this moment on r/pics for thousands to see. While it was unfortunate for the pupper, the scene is definitely a comical one, like something you’d see in Tom and Jerry or some Looney Tunes cartoon.
What led to this rambunctious attack by the groundhog was that the dog kept messing with it until it finally had enough. Nf1087 said the dog had been at it for a full 10 minutes, and he even took a video of the interaction. Unfortunately, mentioning this fact rubbed several Redditors the wrong way, with some asking OP: “Why would you let your dog harass wildlife for 10 minutes?”
The Pennsylvania Pet Owner Was Criticized for Not Training His Dog Properly When Interacting with Wildlife
Others criticized the owner for not calling his dog off when the fight first started. After all, “Your dog stressed the groundhog so bad it attacked your dog,” as one commenter put it. On the flip side, tens of thousands of other Redditors found the sight quite amusing, if not downright hilarious. The size difference between the two, and the martial arts pose the groundhog struck, are definitely one for the photobook.
Reddit users also took this as a chance to put out their best puns, with one of the community’s favorites being “Woodchuck Norris.” “This is incredible,” remarked another commenter. “I would frame that first pic and save it. It’s perfect. I hope your dog is ok but it’s an amazing feat by the groundhog,” wrote a third.
As comical as the scene was, groundhogs are still wild animals people and their pets shouldn’t mess around with. Several Facebook members of the group Eastern Shore Eastern Coyote Sightings recalled how one attacked their dog and son, resulting in thousands of dollars in medical bills. That said, the bigger and more common reason groundhogs are a concern is that they are major pests for people with gardens or attempting to keep their property pristine.
While Nf1087 doesn’t specify whether the groundhog has caused damage to his property, with the way it retaliated to his dog, it’s a force to be reckoned with.
