California Woman Confronts Individual Who Left Their Dog in the Car During a Heat Wave: ‘Break the Windows Next Time’

If you can’t stand the heat… neither can your pet.

As Southern California suffers a summer heat wave, some people are proving themselves more prepared than others to manage the rising temperatures. One individual showed themselves to be unaccustomed to the sunny weather, as they were confronted for allegedly leaving their dog locked in a car in direct sunlight.

According to the woman who posted the video, the temperature in Orange County, California, was an unusually warm 85 degrees Fahrenheit. She claims that she was standing outside the car for 10 minutes, which means the dog was locked in there for at least that long. However, the pet’s human alleges that they were gone for half that amount of time.

Regardless of whose sense of time is more accurate, it is advised not to leave a child or pet alone in a car for any length of time at all – especially on a hot California day. In fact, it is arguably illegal, depending on the circumstances, with extreme heat being one of the factors that would make it a misdemeanor.

Perhaps it was with that law in mind that one Redditor suggested to the woman, “Break the windows next time.” While there are situations in which that would be legal, it is ill-advised for destroying someone’s property to be the first move. Rather, this woman’s course of action to call the authorities, who could then break the window themselves, was the legally safer move.

Other Redditors bashed the man in the video, with sentiments such as, “His response tells you everything you need to know about that individual,” and, “These people are scum.” Many also noted that the woman could be labeled a “Karen,” although that wouldn’t necessarily be a bad thing in this particular scenario. As one person assured her, “I think we can all get behind this kind of Karen.“

However, others felt that – while the woman did the right thing in calling the authorities to rescue the dog – she was unnecessarily antagonizing the man by filming the interaction. One person wrote, “Why does every interaction need to be filmed?” Another responded, in agreement, with, “How else would we know she’s such a good person?“

While the woman’s motives for confronting the man are up for speculation, it is ill-advised to provoke people in these types of scenarios. You can never know who is armed, who is crazy, or who simply might be dangerous when being confronted on-camera.

For the sake of her own safety, the California woman should have protected the dog without putting herself at risk. As one person told the OP, when it comes to the dog’s well-being, “You did the right thing.“
