PETA’s Nearly Nude ‘Human Lobster’ Protest at Maine Festival Goes Viral, but Viewers Can’t Stop Roasting It: ‘I’ll Take Things That Backfired for $500’

Don’t be shellfish

Whether lobsters experience pain when they’re boiled alive has fueled debate over the traditional cooking method for years. PETA brought that controversy directly to the 79th annual Maine Lobster Festival this week with a provocative demonstration urging visitors to reconsider what’s on their plates.

On Wednesday, PETA campaigners positioned a nearly nude model painted bright red to resemble a cooked lobster on a large serving platter complete with lettuce, butter, and a lemon wedge outside the festival grounds. The demonstration carried the slogan, “Try to relate to who’s on your plate,” as the animal rights organization urged festivalgoers to reconsider eating lobster and adopt a vegan lifestyle.

PETA argues that lobsters are capable of experiencing pain and says boiling them alive causes unnecessary suffering. The organization has long campaigned against eating crustaceans and has staged similar demonstrations at seafood festivals.

The Maine Lobster Festival has previously pushed back against PETA’s criticism. After the animal rights organization sued the festival and the City of Rockland over its lobster-cooking practices in 2025, festival organizers said their preparation methods followed “widely accepted and legal culinary practices.” Organizers also disputed PETA’s claims about lobster pain and defended the festival’s longstanding cooking practices.

PETA campaigner Mason Melito described lobster consumption as “extremely cruel and unnecessary,” encouraging festivalgoers to stop eating lobster altogether.

Rather than focusing exclusively on PETA’s animal welfare message, however, much of the online reaction quickly turned toward jokes and memes about the unusual demonstration. “It looks like she trying to bring more customers in, not drive them away,” one commenter wrote, a remark that quickly gained traction alongside dozens of similar reactions.

People Online Focus More on the Model Than the Message

Some of the most highly-voted comments also joked that the display made them crave seafood even more, while several users quipped that the model had become “part of the festival” rather than a protest against it. Many comments focused on the unusual presentation instead of PETA’s animal rights message, with users describing the campaign as unintentionally promotional.

“PETA out here introducing us to kinks we didn’t know we had,” one commenter joked. Another commenter declared, “I’ll take things that backfired for $500.” PETA wasn’t convinced the jokes meant its demonstration had failed. Responding to criticism that the stunt had backfired, the organization replied, “Backfired…by getting more eyes on the issue? Interesting.”

Not all of the criticism was about lobster. Some viewers questioned PETA’s decision to use a nearly nude woman to deliver its message. “Exploiting women like this is the way it backfired,” one Facebook user wrote, questioning whether the presentation invited sexually charged reactions that distracted from PETA’s animal welfare message.

Whether the jokes helped or hurt PETA’s cause depends on who you ask. Critics saw a protest that became a meme, while PETA argued that millions of people seeing its message was a victory in itself. Either way, a nearly nude human lobster managed to become one of the most talked-about sights surrounding this year’s Maine Lobster Festival.
