Have you ever had one of those Phasmophobia haunts where it seems like the ghost just isn’t active at all? Maybe, like me, you’ve tried everything, but the ghost just isn’t popping off with evidence like you need it to in order to finish off the haunt and determine the ghost type. Now, there’s something that can help significantly in similar situations and creates a much more dangerous environment with a super active ghost. The Smudge Stick in Phasmophobia used to have a much different effect on ghosts, but with an update, the use switched up and now rather than protecting you from hunts, it makes ghosts show their faces.

Taking on a haunt in Phasmophobia can often get boring if you’re playing on a lower difficulty or are up against a particularly quiet ghost. However, with a Smudge Stick, you can bring the ghost to life, as long as you can handle the increased paranormal activity.

To light the Smudge Stick, equip your Lighter and turn it on using the right-click on your mouse. When it’s lit, switch to your Smudge Stick by using the mouse wheel and press the F key to light them. Or, if you’re coordinated with a partner, you can have them light them for you or vice versa.

Now that you know how to light a Smudge Stick in Phasmophobia, you’re probably wondering what exactly it does. A Smudge Stick can temporarily increase ghost activity, which can mean that it will create more evidence and more importantly, hunt more often.  So, these items are perfect to get to the bottom of the mysterious ghost that never shows its face.

When lit, a Smudge Stick burns for about 6 seconds. If lit during a hunt, then the ghost is more active and will likely hunt in those six seconds. However, they might go into hiding again after the Smudge Stick burns out. So, find your hiding spot fast.

Do keep in mind that stacking Smudge Sticks is not possible. Therefore, if you want to take multiple Smudge Sticks in with you, you’ll need multiple free inventory slots. That, or you can bring a friend who can carry one as well.

Phasmophobia is available on PC.

She primarily writes gaming articles and fantasy novels. Ark: Survival Evolved is a favorite, along with Diablo 3, Warframe and Minecraft lately, though you can’t forget the good old Magic the Gathering card game! Writing about games truly gives her joy as it gives her another perspective to look at games from, a reason to really look into the mechanics of the game.
