According to recent statements from Xbox boss Phil Spencer, fans of team green should not anticipate a significant console upgrade from Microsoft anytime in the near future. So, no new Xbox is on its way. In an interview with Bloomberg, Spencer emphasized that the current feedback they are receiving does not indicate a strong demand for a major console upgrade. Not only that but in his opinion, the company is content with the existing hardware they have in place and don’t think it needs an upgrade. If games like Starfield work fine on this hardware, it really won’t make any commercial sense to introduce a new model.
Spencer’s comments followed the Xbox Games Showcase that unveiled several exciting developments in terms of gaming and hardware. One notable announcement was the introduction of a new Xbox Series S model with expanded storage capacity. During the event, Xbox representatives also confirmed that they have addressed previous shortages by increasing the supply of the more powerful Xbox Series X. It is worth noting that the Xbox Series X is relatively young, having been released approximately only two and a half years ago.
Why There Shouldn’t Be a New Xbox in the Near Future
In the past, console upgrades have followed a more traditional cycle, with the introduction of enhanced hardware a few years into the console’s release. For instance, the PS4 Pro was released three years into the lifespan of the PlayStation 4, followed by the Xbox One X a year later in 2017. However, it appears that Xbox has no immediate plans for another upgrade. The main reason for this is that games are being developed differently when compared to the last generation. Instead of creating a hard line between two console generations, this time both PlayStation and Xbox have opted for a cross-generational approach. This means most titles that show up on the latest hardware are also available on last-generation consoles, albeit with some visual downgrades. This makes upgrades less enticing for most consumers.
In other Microsoft news, the Xbox Games Showcase showed off some amazing games and provided a closer look at upcoming exclusives like Starfield and Avowed. A ton of other games were also shown. If you missed it, you can check out our list of everything that was shown during the event.
