Not everyone cooks their own turkey for Thanksgiving. Some people hire a professional chef, and that is what one Philadelphia woman decided to do. Unfortunately, her experience was far from ideal.
In a video she shared, she explained how excited she was to try a fried turkey for the first time. That excitement quickly turned into disappointment when she cut into the bird and discovered that the chef had left the giblets bag inside while cooking it. The entire bag had been fried along with the turkey, which is extremely unprofessional.
“Absolutely disgusting,” she said, and she had a point.
When she contacted the chef, he did not respond for several hours. When he finally replied, his message said, “Truly apologize. I had an employee cleaning and washing turkeys while I seasoned and fried. Truly apologize.”
Not exactly the response you want when your Thanksgiving turkey was cooked with a plastic bag inside it.
The Philadelphia woman could have been less upset if she had hired an amateur chef. This was a professional one: she hired chef Milly, who was a contestant of Hell’s Kitchen in two seasons. He also finished in 4th place in both so he was supposed to be good. Leaving a giblets bag inside a turkey is a basic culinary mistake. Plus, if the bag was a plastic one it would have melted inside the turkey. The bag the woman found was made of paper but this is still bad because it could have changed the taste of the turkey. When you pay for a service, you expect to receive a professional one where the quality is good. So she has a right to be upset about this.
People Reacting to the Philadelphia Woman’s Video
It might be a small issue to some, but many people agreed with the Philadelphia woman. Some even said that they would be just as upset. “I would be so pissssed . Hopefully u get a refund,” one woman wrote. It looks like she only got an apology. Others started saying that the bag being left inside meant that the turkey wasn’t cleaned. “So they didn’t wash your turkey?” one person asked. Another person then said, “They most definitely didn’t clean that turkey.” There were some people who tried to defend the chef and say that you shouldn’t clean meat. “Every restaurant and even culinary school. DOES NOT CLEAN THEIR MEAT. It’s normal to not clean ANY meat,” someone commented.
Others agreed with the Philadelphia woman that the situation was absolutely disgusting. “I would’ve been throwing up the whole lining of my stomach,” one woman wrote. The customer later revealed that her family ended up not eating the turkey at all.
She also explained, “I wasn’t looking for anything extra. I paid for the food to be done right and at least an apology when it wasn’t. That’s just basic respect!”
More commenters criticized the chef. One woman wrote, “I am no chef, and I had never cooked a turkey before until Thursday morning. But after watching a bunch of YouTube videos, I thoroughly washed and prepped the bird, removing the bag and neck. So there is literally no excuse for the negligence on his behalf. It was either pure laziness or lack of care.”
At the very least, the chef did apologize in the end.
