When a player captures a new Pokémon in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl, they are given the option to give their new pocket-monster companion a custom nickname. While this feature doesn’t alter gameplay in any way, it’s an immersive way for players to become emotionally attached to their new Pokémon. However, suppose a player eventually wishes to change the nickname of their creature friend or revert its title to its standard species name. In that case, Pokémon Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl provides the option to do so. Continue reading to learn how to rename Pokémon in Pokémon BDSP.

How to Rename Pokémon in Pokémon BDSP

To rename Pokémon in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl, trainers must progress far enough in the game to enter Eterna City. Within the city, players can find an NPC called the Name Rater, and speaking to him will provide the free option to rename Pokémon.

Once reaching Eterna City, head south towards the Pokémart, the blue-roof shop with a Pokéball symbol. Directly to its right sits the Eterna Condominiums. Enter this building and go over to the tables and chairs on the left of the lobby. The Name Rater is the elderly gentleman NPC sitting on the lower table. After a bit of dialogue, he will rate and change the name of any Pokémon of the player’s choosing.

However, keep in mind that only the Pokémon that the player has caught can be renamed in Pokémon Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl. The names of any traded Pokémon obtained from in-game NPCs or other players cannot be changed.

Pokémon Brilliant Diamond/Shining Pearl are available on Nintendo Switch.
