Once you start reaching the upper echelons of Pokemon Go, maxing out your team’s level is a tad slow. Even more so ever since the Go Beyond update, the Pokemon’s maximum CP is from level 40 to level 50. To do that, you’ll need to go hunt for Rare XL Candy. Its purpose isn’t all that different from your run-of-the-mill Rare Candy and Mega Energy, but not to a tee. There’s even a way to convert Candy you don’t need, but you’ll need to know how to get Rare XL Candy in Pokemon Go, so let’s start there.

You won’t see Rare XL Candy appear until you’ve first reached Trainer Level 31 in Pokemon Go. That’s the first step. Like Mega Energy and Candy, you need to seek out Pokemon tied to the one you’re training. For example, if you’re leveling up your Torterra over level 40, then you need to at least hunt for Turtwigs. In addition to the traditional way of catching Pokemon related to the Pokemon you’re training, you can also get Rare XL Candy from these sources:

  • Catching evolved, Legendary and Mythical Pokemon
  • Raid Bosses, events, and Community Day
  • Trading and transferring Pokemon
  • Hatching eggs and walking with your Buddy Pokemon

Lastly, you can convert lesser Candy into Rare XL Candy at a conversion rate of 100 Candy for 1 Rare XL Candy. It’s a rather steep cost, but if you have an overabundance of Candy and you’re only focused on training your dream team, it helps. The more efficient way would be to simply catch Pokemon.

To convert Rare Candy to Rare Candy XL, open the main menu and choose the “Candy -> Candy XL” option. Hit the plus or minus buttons to adjust how many XL Candies you want.

For an idea of how many you’ll need each level, here’s for levels 41 through 50:

  • Lv 41: 10 XL Candies
  • Lv 42: 10 XL Candies
  • Lv 43: 12 XL Candies
  • Lv 44: 12 XL Candies
  • Lv 45: 15 XL Candies
  • Lv 46: 15 XL Candies
  • Lv 47: 17 XL Candies
  • Lv 48: 17 XL Candies
  • Lv 49: 20 XL Candies
  • Lv 50: 20 XL Candies

This applies to all Pokemon, excluding Shadow and Purified Pokemon, which need 360 and 272, respectively. Honestly, 148 XL Candy for a single Pokemon isn’t all that bad.
