Players are exposed to dozens of Pokémon moves over the Generations. Many are unique to specific types, and others are learned via evolution or TM. When it comes to Clear Smog Effect, this move is more niche than anything. It is a rather reliable move, so it’s worth learning. We’ll show you how you can get the Clear Smog Effect in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet.

How to Get Clear Smog Effect in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet

Clear Smog Effect is a move first introduced back in the 5th Generation. A Poison-type move, the base power of it does not make it seem so appealing at first glance. However, it is beyond useful because of what it does. When you use Clear Smog Effect, your companion throws mud at an opponent, and all their stat changes revert back to normal. So, if an opponent is buffed and ready to go for the kill, so to speak, Clear Smog Effect will neutralize that.

But how do you get the Clear Smog Effect in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet? Well, it isn’t easy. You cannot learn this move via TM as you can many other Pokémon moves. Instead, you can only learn the move by doing one of the following:

  • Leveling
  • Breeding
  • Mirror Herb

  • Amoonguss (Level 20)
  • Armarouge (Level 8)

The following Pokémon can learn the Clear Smog Effect as an Egg Move:

  • Drifblim
  • Drifloon
  • Gastly
  • Gastrodon (East Sea)
  • Gengar
  • Golduck
  • Gulpin
  • Haunter
  • Psyduck
  • Shellos (East Sea)
  • Swalot

Clear Smog Effect – Learn by Mirror Herb

Another good way to get the Clear Smog Effect is to use the Mirror Herb. This is an item introduced in Pokémon Scarlet and Violet. Give it to a Pokémon to hold that has an empty move slot. Have a picnic with said Pokémon, and when you have a companion that knows Clear Smog Effect in the picnic, the Pokémon holding the Mirror Herb will learn it too.

However, this will only work if the Pokémon with the Mirror Herb can already get the Clear Smog Effect as an Egg Move. For example, if you have a Psyduck with the Mirror Herb and a Torkoal that knows the Clear Smog Effect, Psyduck can also learn the move.

On the other hand, a Pokémon like Pikachu can hold the Mirror Herb and still not learn the move because it is not part of their Egg Moves.

Now that you know the various ways you can get Clear Smog Effect, jump into Pokémon Scarlet and Violet and see it in action.

Pokémon Scarlet and Violet is available on Nintendo Switch.
