Whatever happened to parents taking responsibility for their kids? If you’re not willing to look after them, maybe you shouldn’t have them in the first place. In Maryland, one mother decided her shopping spree at JCPenney was more important than supervising her child, so she left him behind.
Her solution? Parking him on one of the store’s display beds. An older woman browsing nearby spotted the boy asleep and immediately grew concerned, realizing there was no adult around keeping watch. Sure, he looked peaceful enough, but safety isn’t guaranteed just because a child is napping in public.
One small silver lining: the kid had the good sense to slip off his Crocs before settling in. His mom, unfortunately, showed far less judgment.
The old Maryland woman decided not to leave the kid on his own despite not knowing him. Apparently, she waited for over an hour for his mother to come back. When she didn’t come, the worried woman found no solution other than calling the police. Once the police came over, the kid’s mother appeared. I understand that it could be difficult sometimes to shop while your kids are with you.
That still doesn’t mean that one should endanger them by leaving them on their own. Such a situation could have ended terribly if someone had come and decided to take the kid with them. The woman who filmed the entire incident also shared an update since one of the officers who went to the store contacted her. The officer said that the old woman did the right thing and that no charges were filed against the mother. They did, however, talk to her about how this was dangerous.
People Reacting to the Irresponsible Maryland Mother
The video of the Maryland kid sparked an online debate as people were divided between attacking the mother and defending her. There were several people who believed that it was the right thing to call the police. One woman found it weird that anyone would defend the mother as she said, “Guy this is literally abandonment, what is wrong with yall in these comments?!” Another woman was also outraged. “Y’all can’t be serious. The kid was sleeping in a display bed for over an hour w/no parent in sight. Nobody knew if he was abandoned, lost, or in danger. That’s why the cops were called. Now finding out the mom was actually in the store shopping while telling her kid to nap in a display bed?? That’s beyond irresponsible. Honestly, it’s a good thing someone called, tf,” she wrote.
The two women’s response to the reactions toward the Maryland mother was justified since a lot of people defended her. “yall call the police for anything damn,” one person wrote. Another person said, “Let that baby sleep he ain’t bothering anybody smh.” Someone else added, “Calling the cops instead of telling customer service so they could make an announcement to the parent is so wild.” A woman then said, “Well at least he wasn’t inside a hot car.” The bar is in hell. There was also one person who felt bad for the kid as they wrote, “Ok but that’s a little traumatizing waking up to cops.” This is why someone replied and said, “trust me. You would rather him be a little traumatized by THIS then waking up to be carried out the door by some random man or women.” At least the kid is safe.
