This week it seems a new viral sensation just hit the world wide web. Reaching an all-time high of 3.3 million tweets this week, it’s a simple browser-based clicker game called PopCat which features a familiar cat face if you often look for cat-related memes or cat pictures in general. All you need to do to play or participate in the game is simply to open the popcat.click site and click the cat’s face as fast and as many times as you physically can (or want). Aside from clicking your mouse, you can also use keyboard input, so mashing your face to rack up points is also a viable strategy.
All the points that you currently have will then be combined with the points of other players from the same country. The PopCat site showcases a list of participating countries, from the ones with the highest number of points to the lowest. Right now, the top three Pops Per Second (PPS) countries are from Asia, and their points keep growing higher with each passing millisecond:
- Taiwan – 102,821,950,000, with 12,7k PPS.
- Thailand – 86,741,000,000, with 124k PPS.
- Malaysia – 17,830,900,000, 8k PPS.
Meanwhile, the United States is in the 24th position, with just 343,890,000 points. And for some reason, there’s one-click from North Korea in the 219th position. It’s not clear whether or not Kim Jong Un actually played it once, or it’s just a cheeky joke from the developers. People all over the world have contributed 241 million points in total.
According to the site’s credits, this surreal clicker-slash-internet-phenomenon is made by three web developers from England, Joshua Rainbow O’Sullivan, Edward Hails, and Freddy Heppell. You can check their (more serious) programming works by clicking their names. This PopCat clicker game is as pointless as it sounds, but I guess no one on the internet can resist anything with a cat photo. Have you tried playing it?
