Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Archewell Foundation wraps off the year on a strong note as the lingering “missing millions” scandal reaches an amicable resolution. The Duke and Duchess of Sussex launched their charitable foundation following their 2020 royal exit, championing various philanthropic causes via their self-founded vehicle. Like various other charities, Archewell Foundation runs on funding from benevolent individuals willing to support the causes they stand for. However, Harry and Meghan found themselves in hot water months back after reports suggested their foundation failed to account for at least $4 million in their 2022 tax return.
Back in September, a report by The Mail revealed that the Sussexes’ foundation received two grants totaling over $6 million (£4.5 million) in the last two years. Per the outlet, the charity failed to file this amount in its annual tax return. At the time, Harry and Meghan’s Archewell Foundation was forced to respond to the lingering “missing millions” allegations, noting that their records declaring $2,000,911 in tax return was spot on, and the supposed missing funds would appear in the next tax return.
Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s Archewell Foundation Refutes Claims of Missing Millions
Contrary to this reported discrepancy, a new report has clarified that “all funds were properly accounted for.” According to the report, the said sum, linked to Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s “missing millions” scandal is reflected in Archewell Foundation’s current tax filing for the 2023 fiscal year. In addition to the accounted sum, the organization reportedly saw a record growth within the duration, receiving up to 5.3 million (£4.1 million) in grants. Notably, Archewell Foundation received the said amount from six donors, including an individual donation of $5 million. According to the charity’s tax records, $1.3 million of the acquired grants went into a handful of charitable causes from January to December 2023.
The report by People also confirmed that the charity’s overall revenue for the year, including investment income totaled $5.7 million. This sum scored in Archewell’s third year of operation alone accounts for over a 200% increment from the previous active year. The Outlet reported,
“PEOPLE understands that Archewell’s efforts, including initiatives like The Parents Network and other community-based programs, have attracted more backing, leading to higher funding and assets at the end of the year. These funds will be used to support ongoing projects and expand the foundation’s work.”
Harry and Meghan Receive No Salaries From Charity Project
The tax filing clarifying the “missing millions” claims detailed Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s one-hour-per-week involvement in Archwell Foundation’s operations. It also confirmed that the Sussexes do not receive a salary from their charity project.
Also detailed in the tax filing were the various expenditures the foundation incurred during the period in view, including $997,285 in salary costs, and $1 million in overall expenses. The expenses cover costs, legal fees, travel expenses, and Archewell’s “public-facing initiatives” per the outlet. These projects and expenditures were in line with the charity’s mission to “drive positive change” as stated in its 2020 Impact Report which reads,
“Our purpose is simple yet impactful: to show up, do good. To drive positive change, rally for communities in need, and nurture spaces where everyone is seen, valued, and supported. In 2024, we were honored to work alongside communities, families, and individuals who, despite facing tremendous hardship, are redefining what’s possible.”
This vindicative win for Prince Harry and Meghan Markle comes amid reports that King Charles once again excluded the couple from the royal family’s Christmas fest at Sandringham, making their fourth snub in a row. Royal insiders attributed this to Prince Harry’s incessant demands, including his bid to score UK police security for his family before letting his wife and kids visit his home country. While things may not exactly be working in his favor on the royal front, clearing things on the financial front is certainly a Christmas win for the Sussexes.
