Princess Diana ensured her sons Prince William and Harry understood the plight of the homeless at a young age, steering them towards a course to curb it for good. The Prince of Wales recently unveiled his upcoming Disney+ documentary titled Prince William: We Can End Homelessness, set to premiere on November 1. The documentary, which highlights the royal’s initiative to do away with homelessness in society through charitable causes and awareness creation, features a brief story about his first trip to the Passage, a thriving homeless shelter, with his mom and brother.
Prince William recalled how Princess Diana, who was passionate about helping the homeless, allowed him and Harry to have a wholesome experience with community members in the Passage. The experience ultimately shaped the prince’s resolution to create a world where fewer people are unhappy because of the lack of a basic necessity like a home, just as his mom intended. Although Prince William has poured into this mission through the years with projects like his Homewards launched in 2023, none has been more impactful than the upcoming documentary on the fight against homelessness.
Prince Harry Would Regret Not Taking Part in the Homeless Cause
Royal experts believe that the weight of this new project would trigger deep regret in Prince Harry for turning his back on his brother and, invariably, the opportunity to take part in a cause his mom held so dear. Even worse, he might end up harboring the belief that William only took on the project without him just to spite him. Speaking to The Sun, royal author and journalist Phil Dampier shared,
“I’d like to think that Harry would have some regrets and think to himself, ‘This is a shame that I’m not involved in this’,” he continued. He might see this as something that William’s doing on his own to sort of show him up. I don’t think William’s doing it for that reason, but obviously it’s the contrast between them and the things they’re getting involved with.”
Princess Diana Would Be Upset Harry Won’t Join William on Legacy Project
Notably, like William, the Duke of Sussex has also pursued philanthropic causes addressing pressing societal issues, mostly through the Archewell Foundation which he co-founded with his wife Meghan Markle. While one can’t deny that both have equally excelled in their philanthropic endeavors, the royal expert suggests their late mom would be less than impressed with the situation of things regardless. Princess Diana would especially be “very upset” to see how much her sons Prince William and Harry have drifted apart amid the royal rift. Phil divulged,
“Obviously, if she’d still been alive, you’d like to think that that wouldn’t have happened in the first place. But this is the sort of thing that highlights it. A cause like this. They both could have done so much good for something which she was very anxious for them to do and so I’m sure she’d be absolutely devastated.”
Sadly, even the knowledge that the legendary Princess of Wales would highly frown upon the royal feud is not enough to mend the rift between the brothers. Sharing his thoughts on a possible reconciliation between Harry and William, the royal expert explained that the rift between them remained “as wide as ever.” Hence, contrary to the widely held opinion that Prince William mentioning his brother’s name for the first time in years was an olive branch, Phil believes it only highlighted their feud. He shared,
“It’s just a rather sad indication of the fact that something which they could have worked together on, and something which they both experienced at a young age, they’re no longer doing.”
As for why William mentioned his brother’s name in the first place, Phil Dampier noted that since Harry was a known part of the story, he “couldn’t just airbrush him out of history.” While Princess Diana’s older son’s documentary may or may not be a gesture of peace to his brother Prince Harry, the 42-year-old made an undisputed peace sign earlier. To mark Harry’s 40th birthday, the Prince of Wales paid him tribute on social media, wishing him a happy birthday. The birthday tribute roused talks of a royal reconciliation in the near future. Yet, as weeks progress into months, the reconciliatory pace has only seemed to dwindle further, leaving nurtured hopes lost somewhere in an uncertain future.
