Prince William looks back at a fond memory of his and Prince Harry’s insightful outing with their mom in his new documentary. The Prince of Wales would star in his own self-titled documentary, Prince William: We Can End Homelessness, which premiers on Disney+ next month. The documentary highlights the 42-year-old’s endeavors to combat homelessness over the years while exploring initiatives he has in place to address the menace from the grassroots. Notably, this beautiful initiative, which impacts thousands of lives across the UK and beyond took form during one outing with his brother Harry, and their mom Princess Diana almost three decades ago.
The upcoming series would launch on Disney+ on November 1, with a televised version airing on ITV on October 30 and October 31 in the U.K. In a clip showing excerpts from the documentary, Prince William shared a heartfelt memory from a 1994 adventure with his mom Princess Diana, and brother Prince Harry that is forever engraved in his heart. He also shared the beautiful life lessons learned from the experience, and how it shaped his mission to combat homelessness across the country. This memory marks his first mention of his brother Prince Harry in a long time.
How Princess Diana Influenced Prince Williams’ Bid to Curb Homelessness
Prince William recalled how Princess Diana took him and Prince Harry on a visit to The Passage, a UK charity aimed at assisting the homeless, or those at risk of becoming homeless. He recounted,
“My mother took me to The Passage; she took Harry and I both there. I must have been 11 at the time, maybe 10. I had never been to anything like that before, and I was a bit anxious about what to expect. My mother went about her usual, making everyone feel relaxed, having a laugh, and joking with everyone.”
Going candid about the experience, Pince Williams admitted that during the visit, he found himself imagining how sad everyone would feel if they didn’t have a home. What struck him though was how happy an environment The Passage was despite the sad predicament uniting its occupants. He got to enjoy good conversations and play games with some of the people he met. Fraternizing with the community helped William realize there were people out there who could not enjoy “the same life as you do.” Yet, they found ways to stay happy, just having the roof over their head offered by The Passage, regardless of circumstances. He reflected,
“You know, when you’re quite small, you just think life is what you see in front of you and you don’t really have [the] concept to look elsewhere. It’s when you meet people, as I did then, who put a different perspective in your head and say, ‘Well, I was living on the street last night,’ and you’re like, ‘Woah.’ I remember that happening.”
Williams’ New Documentary Addresses His Longtime Mission
Having understood at that young age how The Passage was the only thing keeping most people from sleeping on the streets one more night, Prince William came to understand the importance of having a home. This ultimately shaped his desire to combat homelessness and possibly end it for good.
In his new documentary, Prince William: We Can End Homelessness, the Prince of Wales tried to establish that the world could indeed curb homelessness for good, offering everyone “a right to a safe and stable home.”
As part of his initiative to combat homelessness, Prince William and The Royal Foundation launched Homewards in June 2023. While its goal to attain a world with fewer occasions of homelessness, until it finally becomes nonrecurrent, remains a long way off, the Prince remains unrelenting in the fight. Hopefully, his new documentary will further raise awareness about this menace, and get more people to key into the initiative, knowing it is possible to end homelessness for good.
