A new standalone Gwent game, code-named Project Golden Nekker, is on the way, set for release on an as-yet-unspecified date in 2022. Based on the popular Gwent card game this is surely going to be something everyone should get excited for.
Details are sparse right now, with CD Projekt Red simply describing Project Golden Nekker as a ‘captivating single-player experience.’ The game will recycle some aspects of the free-to-play digital collectible card game, Gwent: The Witcher Card Game, while weaving in a fresh experience for players. As Gwent communications head Paweł Burza notes:
It’s not another Witcher Tales but something different. We’re aiming to provide a captivating single-player for players who prefer it over competitive multiplayer Gwent.
Post-Cyberpunk 2077 debacle, CD Projekt Red announcing a new game doesn’t quite conjure up the same excitement levels. But, in re-treading hallowed The Witcher ground, the news should be music to the ears of Gwent fans eager to sidestep dabbling in the card game’s multiplayer. Fully standalone, Project Golden Nekker won’t require ownership of any existing Gwent titles to play.
Project Golden Nekker Reveal ‘Soon’
According to Gwent: The Witcher Card Game game director Vladimir Tortsov, a full-fat game reveal is penciled in for some time soon. We can also expect any new cards that pop up in Project Golden Nekker to find their way into multiplayer Gwent in due course, as they did with those released in the standalone The Witcher Tales: Thronebreaker.
We can expect a release in either May or October based on past The Witcher releases. Given how close we are to May and CD Projekt Red has yet to unveil the game officially, October 2022 appears the more likely option of the two for Project Golden Nekker‘s potential release window.
Gwent: The Witcher Card Game and The Witcher Tales: Thronebreaker are both out now worldwide on PC, macOS, Android, and PC, PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, iOS, and Android, respectively.
