Sony Interactive Entertainment CEO John Kodera told investors and analysts during a corporate strategy meeting that the PS4 is entering the final stage of its life cycle.

This news was broken by Takashi Mochizuki of the Wall Street Journal via Twitter. Here is the tweet from Mochizuki quoting Kodera:

PS chief Kodera: PS4 is entering final phase of its life cycle, which would have negative impact to the unit, but recurring revenue via membership services etc should cushion some of that.

If the PS4 is at the end of its shelf life, it is definitely going out with a bang. Spider-Man, Death Stranding, and The Last of Us Part II are all heading to E3 this year for the Sony briefing. All three of those titles are rumored to have 2018 or 2019 release dates.

For those of you who are expecting an epic announcement regarding a new console from the Sony brand this year at E3, I’m sorry to disappoint you. Sony has already confirmed that there are no plans to reveal their next console at this year’s expo.

Chairman of Sony Interactive Entertainment Worldwide Studios, Shawn Layden, appeared on the PlayStation Blogcast to discuss what PlayStation will reveal at E3. Layden said, “There will be no new hardware announcements at E3”.

So unless Layden was completely lying when he said this, it seems that the PS5 is at least a year away from its official reveal. However, with the PS4 winding down, the announcement of the PS5 is inevitable at this point.

Sony’s E3 conference will take place Monday, June 11 at 9 PM ET. Death Stranding, Spider-Man, The Last of Us Part II, and Ghost of Tsushima have been confirmed to be shown at the event.

With the PS4 nearing its end, how do you feel about the console? Is it time for Sony to reveal the PS5? Or is it too soon for another console generation? Let us know in the comments and be sure to follow us here at The Nerd Stash for all of your nerdy news and needs!
