On Thursday evening, we were treated to a brilliant awards show for the best video games of 2015. The Video Game Awards 2015 included a number of world exclusive reveals, but, in my opinion, none was bigger than the announcement of Psychonauts 2.
Although the game is at a very early stage of development, Double Fine are aiming to release the game in 2018. Double Fine are looking for $3.3 million in funding to create the game and are using the game investment site FIG. The website differs from Kickstarter by allowing you to collect a share of the profits, once the project is completed.
Double Fine Productions was founded in 2000 and is run by Tim Schafer. Tim worked at Lucasarts throughout the 90’s and developed some of their greatest adventure games such as Monkey Island, Day of The Tentacle and Grim Fandango.
The original Psychonauts launched in 2005 and had extremely disappointing sales with only 100,000 copies sold. The game did receive critical praise though and has gone on to sell well over the original projected lifetime sales. The story focuses on the main character Raz who wishes to become a secret agent with psychic abilities, a Psychonaut. The game was filled with hilarious characters and witty dialogue which is native to Tim Schafer’s work.
Psychonauts 2 will be built using the Unreal 4 engine which will be a huge improvement over the original game. In regards to using this engine, Tim Schafer explained that it, “allows us to focus on the game instead of the tech. We can focus on art and gameplay, and have Raz running around on day one“. Double Fine are hoping to reunite not only the designers and writers from the first game but the original voice cast too.
