Queenie is coming soon to Hulu, and the first trailer looks promising. The series is the first project between Onyx Collective and Hulu, and it’ll be available to stream on June 7th. The new trailer stars Dionne Brown as Queenie Jenkins, a 25-year-old woman struggling to walk the line between two cultures, a new relationship and an old one, and the past and the present, all while grappling with the age-old question of “who do you want to be?” Bellah and Samuel Adewunmi will also star, with Lionsgate TV and Further South Productions producing the series.
Dionne Brown Stars in the First Trailer for ‘Queenie’ on Hulu
Queenie the TV series takes inspiration from Candice Carty-Williams’ book of the same name. Published in 2019, Queenie follows Queenie Jenkins, a 25-year-old Jamaican British woman who’s straddling the line between two cultures and struggling to find a place in either. She’s also grappling with her sense of self-worth surrounding her job at a national newspaper, and after a long-term boyfriend breaks up with her, Queenie is sent spiraling into bad decision after bad decision as she seeks comfort in “hazardous men who do a good job of occupying brain space and a bad job of affirming self-worth”, per the book description.
The TV adaptation of Queenie will bring the book to life with Dionne Brown (Criminal Record) starring as the titular Queenie Brown, alongside Bellah as Queenie’s childhood friend Kyazike and Samuel Adewunmi as Frankie, Kyazike’s older cousin. The Hulu series will have Carty-Williams serving as an executive producer and showrunner for the series along with Steve November, Sarah Conroy, and Lisa Walters. Candice Carty-Williams has previously written for BBC and Netflix‘s Champion, which received high praise.
Queenie will premiere on June 7th and will be available through Hulu for US audiences, Channel 4 for the UK and Ireland, Star+ in Latin America and Disney+ everywhere else.
