‘Republicans Hate Freedom’: Texas GOP Slammed After Offering Early Blueprint of Plans to ‘Stop Islam’

Is this going too far?

Members of the Republican Party of Texas have recently disclosed plans they say are intended to “stop Islam” in the state, including banning halal food and prohibiting hijabs in schools. The proposals sparked outrage among Texas residents, as many accused the GOP of targeting a small religious minority.

The Dallas Morning News recently reported on the Republicans’ “blueprint” to prevent the “Islamification of Texas.” Republican figures such as State Sen. Bob Hall and State Rep. Wes Virdell, for example, were identified as leading voices behind these ideas during a recent far-right conference hosted by the True Texas Project.

The proposals, which are not yet laws or even formal bills, include restricting clothing such as hijabs and banning halal food, which is prepared in accordance with traditional Islamic law. They also include measures intended to “block the Sharia,” referring to Islamic law, which is not currently enforced legally in Texas.

Reports indicate that only about 2% of Texans identify as Muslim, while 67% identify as Christian.

Texans React to Republicans’ Early Blueprint to ‘Stop Islam’

The so-called blueprint for ending Sharia in Texas did not sit well with users on r/Texas. One person said: “So it’s just straight up racism. The platform is literally just focused on getting the racism done.” Someone else added: “Republicans hate freedom because they are, at their base, cowards. They can’t cope with life outside the comfort of compliance.”

Others called out the GOP over what they perceived as hypocrisy: “Look at these people, the party of small government and individual rights… They want to turn Texas into a nanny and surveillance state.”

Some folks also believed that the proposals violated fundamental rights in the United States: “Food? Seriously? Not only is that blatantly bigoted and anti-First Amendment (I feel like an entire culture of food counts as self-expression), but it’s just plain stupid. Halal is pretty healthy and affordable; it’s gotten me through many a hard night.”

Overall, users were mostly concerned about the future, with some struggling to understand what anyone would gain from these actions. One person offered their own theory: “Because their policies have failed. There is no ‘Golden Age’ Trump promised them, and ‘Owning the Libs’ doesn’t make gas cheaper, groceries affordable, or healthcare affordable either. So they have to double down on what works, which is just boosting hysteria about others.”

It remains to be seen whether these proposals will eventually become law, but Republican politicians aligned with these ideas are likely to continue pushing them in the near future.
