A new Resident Evil fan film just began its crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo, and it’s picked up some credibility after announcing that a major actor from the original horror game series is on board. The licensed live-action Resident Evil movies are lucrative but often disappointing to fans and critics. However, the team behind this fan film is promising to put more care into it.
Resident Evil may be the most prolific video game franchise when it comes to theatrical adaptations, with seven feature-length films and a Netflix series coming from the franchise over the last two decades. None of that material breaks the curse of video games historically getting poorly received adaptations, and not a single one of the Resident Evil movies has higher than a 37% critic score on Rotten Tomatoes. A fan film currently running a crowdfunding campaign on Indiegogo is promising to change that, though.
A Resident Evil Fan Film
The fan film is titled The Keeper’s Diary: A Biohazard Story and it recently went live on Indiegogo with the aim of raising $40,000 to fund the production. The movie is being produced by Black Ridge Media Productions, a studio operating out of Utah, and the director is Andrew Saullo, a Resident Evil superfan who recently directed a cast reunion interview with the original actors from RE1‘s 1996 live-action cutscenes. It’s one of those actors, Charlie Kraslavsky AKA the original live-action actor for Chris Redfield, who is currently on board to play the lead role. Charlie didn’t have any speaking lines in RE1, since his voice was dubbed over by Chris Redfield’s in-game voice actor Scott McCulloch, so it will be a treat for fans to see Kraslavsky actually get to voice a Resident Evil character.
The movie will adapt and fully flesh out a story from a diary entry that can be found in the Spencer Mansion back in the original iconic horror game. The diary entry is famous among the community as it intimately follows a researcher while the T-Virus slowly infects and drives him mad, culminating in the final entry “itchy, tasty.” It’s an interesting concept for a short film that will certainly intrigue fans of the original game, and it will be interesting to see how a short diary entry plays out as a longer film.
Currently, the Indiegogo project has raised almost its first $10,000 with 27 days remaining to collect the remaining $30k. Black Ridge Media Productions writes that, if successfully funded, the short film is planned to become free for all to watch on YouTube in late 2023 or early 2024.
