A resident who opposed an upcoming data center was removed from a township meeting by police. Residents in Van Buren, Michigan are less than excited after hearing news of a proposed data center in the area. They came together to stand up against township officials so they could have their voices heard.
A TikTok posted by @debateher shows what happened at a Van Buren meeting on proposed AI data centers. Residents in the area were “outraged” after finding out a Google data center would be possibly proceeding forward. For months now, the local residents have been pushing against it. They decided to show up at a township meeting and stand up against council on the matter. However, things got more heated than expected.
In a video of the meeting, a woman approaches the podium to share her views and voice opposition to the proposed data centers. A police officer then enters the frame to escort her from the stand, as officials move to bring her remarks to an end. As he tells her, “Time to go,” she responds by calling township officials “grifters and liars.” She is also heard telling the officer not to “touch her” as he attempts to guide her away from the podium.
After the local woman has her say on the matter, an elderly man takes the stand. He says, “If we don’t like what you’re doing, we can say no. You gonna throw people out because they boo these clowns?” You can hear residents in the background booing and yelling, “Amen!” While all this is happening, the person recording the meeting pans to the township members. One of them has a big grin on his face as residents are bashing him for his decisions.
Another resident takes the stand and mentions, “I cannot wait to make sure that every single one of you are recalled.” She threatens them with legal action. After she says her piece, the treasurer of the council tells the room that “we love data centers here.” He accuses the residents of lying and spreading misinformation about the data centers.
Commenters felt outraged after the video went viral of the residents standing up for their town against data centers. One commenter suggested, “All they see is money money money.” Another commenter stated that the council members are “out of touch, not out of reach.”
Other commenters shared their confusion and anger surrounding those who make the decisions to move forward with these proposed data centers across the U.S. One commenter mentioned, “And they’re all so old they’ll be dead before the real consequences are felt. They’re just making their paycheck so they can have a golden casket. I hope they all pass alone and hopeless.”
For the town of Van Buren, Michigan, residents will soon see what the future holds as plans move forward. Whether community concerns influence the outcome remains to be seen.
