Residents Mock Freedom Caucus’ Plans to Remake Maryland’s GOP: ‘So they want to keep losing?’

Could the plan work?

Maryland’s Freedom Caucus is looking to expand its influence, and it appears to be targeting moderate Republican candidates to do so. This sparked mockery online, as many Democratic voters argued that the only result would be even fewer votes for the GOP in Maryland.

According to reports from The Banner, the state’s Freedom Caucus is targeting fellow Republicans in the primaries instead of going after Democrats. The strategy is reportedly intended to reshape the GOP from within and build a more ideologically conservative legislative bloc. However, it has also been portrayed as divisive and has drawn pushback from some segments of the party.

The approach has already yielded at least one victory. Former state Del. Kevin Hornberger lost to Derek Howell in the GOP primary after a campaign that labeled him a “liberal Republican,” ending his bid for a fourth term for the 35th district of Maryland.

Maryland Residents React to Freedom Caucus’ Plans

The news sparked strong reactions from a mostly liberal audience on Reddit’s r/Maryland, as users mocked the Freedom Caucus’s efforts to reshape the party. One person wrote, “LOL. Good luck. No, seriously. Wishing for their success. PRAYING for it. Maryland GOP is already irrelevant – putting the Freedom Caucus in charge would chart the course toward extinction. Sounds good!”

Other local voters argued that “this would be the best thing for the Dems here. Some Marylanders could fall for a traditionally conservative group who would (lie and) claim to be for fiscal responsibility and public safety, a la Larry Hogan. But ain’t nobody here voting MAGA,” so they were not afraid of radicalization.

Most residents said they were not concerned about the Maryland Freedom Caucus at all. One user wrote, “Go for it. Marylanders still hate the toxic garbage you’re peddling.” Another added, “Maryland’s GOP barely survives off of being moderates. Them going MAGA would make them completely unpalatable.”

Overall, many Democratic commenters argued that the strategy would further reduce the Republican Party’s electoral prospects in Maryland, a possibility they welcomed with open arms. One person summarized the whole discussion: “So they want to keep losing?”
